The Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra, opens a national call for 1 master (BI) for the purpose of carrying out research tasks within the project ““Membrane proteins – development of new computational approaches and its application to G-Protein Coupled Receptors”, PTDC/QUI-OUT/32243/2017. The selected candidate will comply with the following criteria:

Master (MSc) in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, or related fields.

Scientific area: Biotechnology Bioinformatics

Specific Scientific area: Computational Biochemistry and Bioinformatics

Benefits

Financial conditions: The amount of the grant is € 1.104,64 corresponding to the monthly compensation stipulated in the FCT table (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), plus social security (Seguro Social Voluntário, first level contributions) and personal accidents insurance. The payment will be made by bank transfer. This amount will not be increased during the entire period of the grant duration.

Eligibility criteria

Selection Methods: Curricular evaluation (AC) 60% and interview (E) 40%.

The formula to evaluate the curricular evaluation (AC), in a 0-100 scale, will be:

AC= 0.70*CV+0.30*AP

In which CV = 0.60*A + 0.10*B + 0.30*C e AP = 0.50*D + 0.50*F

 

E = 0.5*G + 0.5*H

 

 

Selection process

Selection criteria:

In the Curricular evaluation (AC), in a 0-100 scale, the following criteria will be assessed

(i) merit and adequacy of the candidate curriculum vitae (CV) - 70%;

(ii) suitability of the candidate's profile to the tasks to develop (AP) - 30%

In the CV criteria, the following parameters will be taken into account:

  1. Master's grade (60%)
  1. Under 16,99 – 50
  2. From 17 to 17,99 – 100
  1. Participation in scientific meetings (10%)
  1. 0 meetings – 0
  2. Between 1 and 4 meetings – 50
  3. Over 5 meetings - 100
  1. Scientific publications in journals or book chapters (both as first author or co-authorship) (30%)

1. 0 papers – 0

2. Between 1 and 3 papers – 75

3. Over 4 papers – 100

 

 

In the AP criteria, the following parameters will be taken into account:

  1. Structure and protein sequence (30%)
  2. Big data ana genomic analysis (70%)

with each of D e F subcriteria valued as:

  1. No experience – 0
  2. Reasonable experience – 50
  3. Adequate experience – 70
  4. Proficient experience – 10

In the Interview (E) criteria, the following parameters will be taken into account:

  1. Knowledge of object-oriented programming in language Python in Linux preferably, and R and text-mining knowledge.
  2. Motivation and autonomy

Formalization of application: Applications must be formalized by sending the following elements: motivation letter, detailed CV with academic profile (including publications list). A master’s degree Certificate with the final average must also be submitted. Proof of enrollment in a doctoral/PhD course relevant for the R&D activities and other relevant documents must also be provided. Applicants with academic degrees obtained abroad will be required to present a Certificate of Recognition in accordance with applicable law

Skills/Qualifications

The work to be developed will focus on the development of new methodologies to be applied to the structural and mechanistic analysis of membrane proteins.

 

Specific Requirements

Admission requirements: Holders of a master’s degree in Biotechnology, Biochemical Pharmacy, Toxicology, or related fields. Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD, aiming to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree, whether integrated or not in R&D projects.
