Research Scholarship for Bachelor Degree (Licenciatura)
 
Summary: A research position for 1 (one) Research Grant ("Bolsa de Licenciado") is open at Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território, within the project Nunataryuk (grant agreement n.o 773421), funded by Horizon 2020 program.

Admission Requirements: Graduates in Geography or related fields, who are enrolled in a master's program of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning may apply to this call.
 
The candidate must:
  • Have a degree in Geography or related fields;
  • Be enrolled in a Master's program at IGOT-ULisboa;
  • Have experience in the application of automatic delineation algorithms of the coastline (CoastSat and/or WaterDetect), as well as in the use of the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (ARCGIS) module;
 
  • Have a good level of scientific knowledge in the field of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems, with an advanced user level in QGIS, ARCGIS, ENVI and PIX4D software;
 
  • Have a good knowledge of Portuguese and English.
Eligibility of candidates
Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions provided for in article 9 of the FCT IP Research Grant Regulation (Regulation No. 950/2019, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 241 on December 16th, 2021).
 
Project Summary:
The contribution of the IGOT team to the NUNATARYUK project aims to assess the impact of erosion on Arctic permafrost coasts and analyze the main factors that condition it. The analysis is carried out using surveys terrain using unmanned aerial vehicles, GNSS, as well as through analysis of radar and multispectral satellite imagery.
 
Work objectives:
The work plan of the scholarship holder to be hired is as follows:
  • Manual delineation of the coastline and coastal morphology types from Sentinel-2, Pleiades and WorldView 2 images of study sectors on the coast from the Arctic Ocean;
  1. Creation of a database describing sea conditions, lighting, atmosphere, among others, for Sentinel-2 images;
  2. Characterization of the coastal morphology of the sectors to be studied;
  3. Calculation of coastal erosion rates;
  4. Automatic shoreline delineation applying different algorithms;
  5. Comparison of the efficiency of different algorithms;
  6. Evaluation of the factors that condition the quality of the results of automatic coastline delineation algorithms;
  7. Preparation of an article with the research results.

Workplace
The work will be developed at the Center for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, under supervision scientific of Professor Gonçalo Vieira.
 
Duration: 9 months.
 
Start date: scheduled to start in November/December 2021, on an exclusive basis.
 
Monthly salary: 835,98€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ).
 
Selection criteria:
Curriculum evaluation (CE) comprises the following parameters:
  • Curriculum Vitae (30%);
  • Graduation classification (30%);
  • Scientific knowledge in the field of remote sensing and systems of Geographic Information, with an advanced user level in the software QGIS, ARCGIS, PIX4D and ENVI (10%);
  • Experience in the application of automatic line delineation algorithms coast, as well as using the Digital Shoreline Analysis module System (10%);
  • Motivation letter (10%);
  • Level of fluency and rigor in written expression, in Portuguese and English (10%).
The jury may, if it deems it necessary, call the candidates placed in the first 3 positions for an interview. In this case, the interview has a weight of 30%, added to the score obtained in the first selection phase, which will have a weight of 70%. The interview will take place at a date and time to be communicated to the candidates in due course.
The jury may not award any scholarship if the candidates do not correspond to the desired profile.

The selection panel for the applications for this scholarship is composed of the following elements:
  • President of the Jury: Professor Dr. Gonçalo Brito Guapo Teles Vieira, from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon;
  • 1st Effective Member: Professor Carla Andreia da Silva Mora, from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon;
  • 2nd Effective Member: Professor Pedro Miguel Duarte Berardo Pina, from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Coimbra;
  • 1st Alternate Member: Professor Dr. Gonçalo Nuno Delgado Prates, from the Department of Civil Engineering of the Superior Institute of Engineering of University of Algarve;
  • 2nd Alternate Member: Researcher Doctor Maria Teresa Cabrita, of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon;
Results
The final results of the evaluation will be communicated to the candidates through notification sent to the email address indicated for this purpose.
 
If the result is unfavorable to the granting of the requested scholarship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to comment, if desired, in a prior hearing to the interested parties, pursuant to articles 121 and 122 of the Code of Administrative Procedure (DL nº 4/2015 of January 7th).
 
The selected candidate must state in writing their intention to accept the scholarship. In case of non-acceptance, the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate in order of final ranking.
 
Application deadline and form of submission of applications: The call is open from 11th of November to 24th of November 2021.

  4. Proof of enrollment in a master's program at IGOT-ULISBOA;
  5. Letter of interest;
  6. Other supporting documents considered relevant;
  7. Declaration of prior consent by electronic means.
