OFFER DESCRIPTION

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time 15-month (1 February 2022 to 30 April 2023) fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Functional Genomics (IGF) in Montpellier, France. This offer integrates a multidisciplinary and translational research program, EnviroDisorder (Montpellier University of Excellence MUSE), examining the effect of environmental pesticides in the etiology of autism spectrum disorders and when combined with genetic predisposition.

This multidisciplinary project proposes an integrated clinical-experimental approach to understand the role of genetics and environmental glyphosate in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). An epidemiological study will highlight the environmental determinants of ASD prognosis. In the laboratory, we will control the administration of glyphosate to mice to mimic human-relevant exposure condition. In vivo longitudinal electroencephalographic and behavioral assessments will diagnose the impact of pesticide exposure in combination with genetic mutations predisposing to the development of ASD-like phenotypes. A corollary aim is to examine a possible involvement of the neuro-glio-vascular unit and cells during disease progression. In terms of public health, this study could provide evidence for a re-evaluation of the current regulations on the use of glyphosate in Europe. The long-term benefit would then be to reduce the incidence of ASD, and/or improve the symptoms of children with ASD.

Eligibility criteria

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for 15 months within a one-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post-doctoral education.

Offer Requirements

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate will be responsible for mice breeding and genotyping, exposure to glyphosate during gestation, analyses of birth rate / mortality, brain microdissection, and transcriptomic analysis. The neurovascular unit will be studied by imaging approaches, including 3D transparent brain preparations with integration to previous electroencephalographic maps. The candidate’s role in exploring the impact of glyphosate exposure and genetic mutation will be seen as essential for the success of the program of work.

Specific Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the fields of molecular neuroscience, neuropharmacology or neuroendocrinology. Documented experience in and abilities in mouse handling, experimentation and dissection will be minimally required. Experience in genotyping, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, RNA extraction and functional genomic analysis will be seen as a plus. An ability to interact socially and scientifically in a multidisciplinary environment will be required. Previous work experience and publication record will be considered as an important element during the selection process.
