The Department of Geosciences and Geography (at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department. The staff at the department numbers some 100. Institute of Seismology https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/institute-of-seismology belongs to the Department of the Geosciences and Geography. The Institute performs research, education, continuous Earth monitoring, and helps government and private organisations in their projects requiring seismological expertise.

Faculty of Science invites application for


starting from January 2022 or as agreed for a permanent position.
Core responsibilities are associated with seismological observatory practice of the Finnish National Seismic Network and mobile networks. The person is expected to oversee the modernization of the seismological analysis workflow and products of ISUH, and to develop and maintain this scalable analysis workflow in the future. The workflow is to be implemented on the Unix/Linux computing platforms in collaboration with the Institute´s technical teams.

We seek a motivated team player with demonstrated experience in seismological observatory practice such as seismicity analysis, seismic monitoring, software development and implementation. Skills in project management and communication with scientific and public audiences are merits. The candidate should have a doctoral degree in geosciences or related field. The salary will be based on level 9-11 of the demands level chart for expert and support personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities.

The position starts with a six-month trial period.
