The Department of Conservation offers professional degree programs and research on issues of cultural heritage, landscapes, cultural environments, buildings, gardens, crafts, cultural historical objects, and interiors.  Subject area description

We are searching for a Senior Lecturer in Conservation Science/Heritage Science to join the conservation section and contribute to our expertise in the area of the scientific analysis of heritage materials. Experience in the use of methods such as optical microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), electrochemical methods and others such as multi/hyper-spectral imagining and experience in the analysis of both organic and inorganic materials will be considered an advantage.

The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain a high-level research program with emphasis on materials science and participate in the undergraduate and graduate level teaching in conservation at our department. We expect the successful candidate to strengthen and complement the research performed at our section. We are particularly interested in enhancing our research areas in materials analysis (as described above). 

We are committed teachers with extensive and broad experience in all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education in conservation of cultural heritage. We are continuously seeking opportunities for pedagogical improvement. Our ambition is to teach conservation at the highest international level. 

Job assignments 

We are recruiting a senior lecturer in the field to strengthen the department’s research and teaching in the analysis of heritage materials. As a successful applicant you will be expected to: 

  • To deliver teaching for the BSc and MSc in conservation of cultural heritage objects
  • To deliver demonstrations of scientific analysis of heritage materials
  • To train students and other users in the use of analytical equipment and assist with interpretation as required
  • To design, organize and teach specialised courses for the conservation section and participate in courses shared with other degrees within the department.
  • To engage with other members of staff in teaching and research projects.
  • To manage relevant budgets for individual courses in co-operation with the Coordinator and the Director of Studies.
  • To liaise with colleagues in other departments and museums to access resources and collections that could be used in the delivery of the programmes.
  • To follow professional development and training needs of museum staff in Sweden, and create partnerships for sharing skills.
  • Initiate doctoral projects and supervise doctoral students.
  • To carry out research relevant to the department and the field of expertise
  • To publish research articles in peer-reviewed, international journals.
  • To establish and nurture key relationships with museums, the National Heritage Board (RAÄ) and other relevant organisations in Sweden and beyond.
  • To apply for external research funding.
  • To promote equality of opportunity and demonstrate commitment to diversity, in line with UGOT regulations.
  • To promote UGOT degree programmes, research and other activities and act as an ambassador.

You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities in order to develop your teaching and research. Communication and collaboration skills are important since many of your duties will be carried out in collaboration with other colleagues and museum and heritage professionals. You will be expected to collaborate with actors outside academia, for instance, in collaborative research or museum and community outreach activities. If you have no courses in University teacher’s training, you are expected to take such courses within two years from the start of the employment.  The university offers courses in teaching and learning in higher education.
