OFFER DESCRIPTION

- Implement the strategy and procedures for sampling the archaeological material;
- Carry out analyses of archaeological material, exploit, interpret and present the results of the analysis;
- Participate in ceramic experimentation sessions in collaboration with L. Gomart;
- Participate in the sampling of geo-materials in the field;
- Participate in tomographic acquisitions in collaboration with S. Cohen;
- Participate in deep learning data processing within the CEPAM laboratory in collaboration with D. Binder;
- Participate in the dissemination and valorisation of the results (technical reports, publications and international conferences).

Tomography is increasingly used to visualise the internal structure of ancient ceramics in 3D and thus contribute to the reconstruction of their manufacturing processes. It is based on the existence of a direct link between the type of action implemented on the clay material and the spatial organisation of the pores and inclusions it contains. However, for this approach to constitute a real methodological breakthrough, a systematisation of the segmentation and data processing protocols is essential. This systematisation implies a rigorous characterisation of the clay raw materials used for the fashioning of the vessels, as these react in varied way to the plastic deformations caused by the shaping gestures, the same technical gesture giving rise to different configurations according to the type of material used. It is this variability that the DIM MAP MATRICES project proposes to explore through the integrated analysis of ceramic assemblages from the LBK period, combining an exhaustive study of the technical macrotraces on the surface and in section, characterisation of the microfabrications in thin sections and micro-tomographic acquisitions. Coupled with the development of an experimental gesture/material reference system and quantitative data processing (AI), this multi-scalar approach constitutes an essential milestone for the application of 3D imaging techniques to the restitution of ancient ceramic traditions. The postdoctoral fellow in archaeometry will be in charge of the mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical characterisation of ceramic materials for the identification of the origin and production methods of archaeological pottery within the DIM MAP MATRICES project. He/she will participate in the sampling of geo-materials in the field in the Aisne valley (Picardy) and in the experiments planned within the project. He/she will conduct SEM analysis of the microfabrics and participate in the micro-tomographic acquisition campaign planned in the IPANEMA laboratory (Synchrotron Soleil, Saint Aubin). Finally, he/she will participate in the deep learning processing of the data in the CEPAM laboratory (Nice) and will take part in the dissemination and valorisation of the results obtained.

The UMR 8215 (CNRS/UP1PS) brings together 108 people (CNRS, UP1PS, INRAP, local authorities, post-doctoral students, PhD students). The research focuses on the historical trajectories of societies from their sedentarisation to the emergence of the State (recent prehistory, Protohistory). The UMR was a pioneer in the characterisation of ceramic materials (recognition of degreasing agents, assembly techniques, experiments, etc.) and its research is supported by three research centres: "Documentary resources", "3D acquisition methods and geomatics" and "Multi-material tracing". The USR IPANEMA is a laboratory for the development of advanced methods for the characterisation of materials from archaeology, palaeoenvironment, palaeontology and cultural heritage, and for the support of synchrotron research with external users hosted on the platform. To do this, IPANEMA develops and provides a set of techniques for studying artefacts and samples, preparing samples, and statistically analysing the data sets collected. The UMR 7264 CEPAM is a joint CNRS-UNS research unit that develops research on the knowledge of past societies, their modes of operation, their evolution and their relationship with the environment. CEPAM is positioned as an interdisciplinary structure with a broad interface between the human, natural and physicochemical sciences, with specialities that are rare both nationally and internationally (e.g. the study of avifauna, phytoliths and biomolecular archaeology), and with well-identified study areas in the Mediterranean area. CEPAM is currently coordinating the IDEX project JEDI ArchAIStory (I. Théry-Parisot dir.) at the interface between archaeology and artificial intelligence (AI). Within the framework of this project, the TRAD-IA workshop (D. Binder and J. Leblond dir.) is particularly interested in the applications of AI for the restitution of ceramic and lithic traditions of the past.
