OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Project IsoCAN (Isolation and evolution in oceanic islands: the colonisation of the Canary Islands) funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant 851733) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher in Zooarchaeology to investigate the role of terrestrial animal resources in subsistence during the indigenous period of the Canary Islands. Specifically, the postdoctoral research will approach (1) what is the range of livestock types and management strategies characterizing the archipelago subsistence? (2) what was the role of wild animals and how many of them are currently extinct? The contract will be full-time (37.5 h per week) for three years from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024.

IsoCAN project will explore the first colonisation of the Canary Islands from the beginning of the Common Era to the 15th century AD, which represents the last expansion of the Mediterranean farming package. This project will (1) establish the chronology of the initial colonisation of the Canary Islands; (2) determine the geographic origins and the genetic variability of the human population, domesticates (animals and plants) and parasitic species (insects); (3) define the process of adaptation and resilience of the first settlers; and (4) investigate human impact on landscape and the management of natural resources.

Tasks

  • Undertake zooarchaeological analysis both independently and collaboratively
  • Manage large and complex datasets with attention to detail
  • Develop and apply ethical strategies for destructive sampling
  • Contribute to scientific communication and outreach program including website and social networks of IsoCAN
  • Support the Principal Investigator and project researchers during research activities including data collection
  • The post-doctoral researcher will be mainly based at University of Las Palmas. However, her/his activity will be carried out within island museums from the Canary Islands

Skills/Qualifications

  • Have a PhD or equivalent qualification and experience in zooarchaeology (only European degrees with its translation to Spanish or English, or degrees with recognition or equivalence in Spain)
  • Proven experience in zooarchaeology
  • Proven specialist knowledge to undertake full and detailed recording of archaeological animal remains
  • Capacity to work collaboratively, cooperating with other team members in the collection, analysis, interpretation and publication of results
  • Fluent in English (oral and written)

Specific Requirements

  • Experience in pre-treatment of various hard tissues for stable isotope analysis
  • Ability to deliver on time, synchronizing with a diverse team
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a multicultural environment
