Extreme Natural Phenomena RIKEN Hakubi Research Team
RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research
(Team Leader: Teruaki Enoto)
Our laboratory is a RIKEN Hakubi research team that was established in January 2020. We are working to elucidate the extreme natural phenomena in the universe and the earth by applying high-energy radiation measurement techniques. The three pillars of our research project are "Exploring the new field of high-energy atmospheric physics in lightning and thunderclouds," "Exploring new X-ray astronomy using CubeSats," and "Exploring lunar water resources using neutrons produced by cosmic rays". The basic philosophy behind these radiation measurement projects is "Collective Power of Science," which is the idea of organically linking a large number of instruments to produce scientific results rather than a single giant instrument. The phrase "Collective Power of Science" also expresses our desire to rethink science as a culture, emphasizing its relationship with society rather than closing it off to the research community by utilizing academic crowdfunding and open science.
[Job title and description]
Job title, available positions:
Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist 1 position
Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or less.
Research Scientist is defined as those with a doctoral degree more than 5 years.
The researcher will design, fabricate, and operate new radiation detectors for the projects presented in the laboratory outline. For example, we will develop a new neutron and gamma-ray detector that will operate on the Moon. We aim to demonstrate the detector in space using the International Space Station or CubeSat. The detectors are intended for lunar water resource exploration and gamma-ray astronomy on the lunar surface with radio astronomy and other fields. We are also planning to demonstrate the developed detector for measuring radiation from lightning and thunderclouds.
