RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research aims at revealing underpinnings behind complex living systems by bridging biological scales and temporal dynamics. Under this grand aim, we pursue computing for biology and biology for computing. On one hand, we develop advanced computational methods and robotic systems to advance various aspects of cell biology research – with the ultimate aim to automate them. On the other hand, we learn biological principles to inspire the next generation of AI and computing. More specifically, we primarily work on three research areas: 1) development of intracellular biochemical reaction network modeling and simulation techniques to predict phenotypic dynamics from genotypic information, 2) Robotic biology (automation of laboratory experimentation with AI robots), and 3) development of biologically- inspired AI architectures and their applications to life science research including image processing, experiments planning, and hypotheses generation.

Senior Research Scientist: 1 position
We seek a senior research scientist with the ambition to tackle the long-standing problem in molecular systems biology to realize whole genome-scale modeling and simulation of cellular systems. The successful candidate will support the team leader, mentor researchers in the lab, and conduct his/her research in cellular modeling and simulations as part of three major subjects in this laboratory.
The candidate should have broad knowledge in computational systems biology, a strong experience in software engineering of large-scale biological simulation software, and mathematical skills for devising novel simulation algorithms. More specifically, the candidate should have (1) more than 5 years of research experience in computational systems biology with a strong track record, and (2) working experience as a software architect of cellular simulation software. Also, (3) research experience in database integration to construct automated modeling pipelines of intracellular biochemical reaction network, and (4) experience and track record in education/mentoring of students, young researchers and engineers would be big pluses.
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and development on topics specified above and to contribute to the management of the laboratory.
