[Research Field and Overview]
The Microbe Division in RIKEN BRC known as Japan Collection of Microorganisms (JCM) has been collecting, preserving, and distributing cultured microbial strains of diverse species. Our mission is to contribute to scientific communities in a variety of fields with our serving high-quality microbial resources useful for research and developments related environmental and human health issues as well as basic science, to respond to growing needs of them in these communities. We are also working to continuously improve our function as one of the leading microbial resource centers in the world, to exploit new microbial resources, and to develop techniques related to microbial resources and those investigating microbial symbionts and yet-uncultured microorganisms in nature.

The position at the time of hiring will be determined through the selection process.
Bacteria are the major microbial resources in JCM important for research and they comprise diverse species in characters and cultivation conditions. The successful candidate is expected to be one of the experts leading the domestic and world-wide researches on bacterial resources, and to conduct research and development on bacteria described below. In addition, he/she will play a central role in the operations of the Microbe Division of RIKEN BioResource Research Center.
･By comprehending research trends and needs, the candidate himself/herself will isolate, identify, and select novel bacterial strains useful for research as well as conduct collection, preservation, quality control, and distribution of bacterial strains developed by domestic and overseas researchers.
･The candidate will analyze and release the information regarding characteristic features of bacterial resources as well as their relevant published research articles, in order to improve their values for the use. In particular, he/she will focus on genome sequence analyses of bacterial resources in JCM and not only determine the genome sequences as many as possible but also perform data analyses of the functional annotations and comparisons with other bacteria, in order to respond to increasing research needs.
･The candidate will develop and apply techniques for quality control based on mass spectrometry data and genome sequence information, and will conduct research and development on yet-uncultured microbial symbionts in nature as unexploited microbial resources through cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell genomics.
･The candidate will take active part in policy making and operation of the Division from a long-term point of view for the sustainability of Division or Center, with deep knowledge on whole microbial researches.
･The candidate will have responsibility for his/her working group in the Division as its leader, give advice to the research community based on his/her expertized knowledge and promote dissemination of bioresources and relevant technologies.
