Computational Climate Science Research Team
RIKEN Center for Computational Science
(Team Leader: Hirohumi Tomita)

[Research Field and Overview]
There is an urgent need to formulate mitigation measures and adaptation measures for regional climate during global warming (e.g., based on the Climate Change Adaptation Act in Japan). Factors such as the new coronavirus infection have made regional policy more complex. There is an urgent need for comprehensive urban design to improve people's QoL and respond appropriately to climate disasters. Our laboratory conducts practical research using high-performance computers for such scientific and social issues.

[Open Positions]
Open Positions:
Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist: 1 position (Female only)
The position at the time of hiring will be determined through the selection process.

Job description:
So far, as we have seen in the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports, there is a wide range of future climate change projections. Also, there is great uncertainty in assessing heavy rainfall disasters and intense summer heat in each region on a local government scale.
We are openly seeking a researcher to evaluate uncertainty, understand the uncertainty itself, identify its causes, and propose a way of assessment of appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures for regional climate change. We welcome the researcher who is willing to conduct regional climate experiments using a large-scale computer such as Fugaku and has the ability to voluntarily promote research in collaboration with climatological and other disaster prevention science researchers in other institutes and governments.
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and development on topics specified above and to contribute to the management of the laboratory. Senior Research Scientist is also expected to assist the laboratory head.
