About the subject

Classical Archaeology and Ancient History is the study of the Mediterranean cultures in the historical period of Antiquity. Emphasis is on the cultures of Greece and Rome, during the early historical and prehistorical periods, as well as the links between these cultures and those in Egypt, Western Asia and Europe north of the Alps. The subject is multidisciplinary in nature and offers various disciplinary and theoretical approaches. A basic tenet of the subject is that is covers the study of both materials and texts.

The research in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History currently being conducted at Lund University addresses several different areas but deals primarily with the history, religion, art, architecture and material culture of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world, from the Archaic period to the early imperial period, as well as broader cultural and societal phenomena and processes.
