The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) has been a major contributor of planetary explorations of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). NAOJ has the RISE Project which now participates in Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) project of JAXA/ISAS (https://www.mmx.jaxa.jp/en/) to lead MMX Geodesy sub science team (G-SST). G-SST is responsible for (a) providing MMX science members with high-quality geodetic products such as spacecraft orbits and Phobos shape model, and (b) investigating internal structure of Phobos. To fulfill these responsibilities, G-SST collaborates with Instrument Teams and Working Teams that are closely related with (a) and (b), examines spacecraft operations in the vicinity of Phobos, and promotes cooperation with foreign space agencies and institutions. The RISE Project makes the best use of its experiences in geodetic studies of SELENE and Hayabusa2 missions for MMX, particularly, in (A) analysis of spacecraft orbits and Phobos gravity field, (B) shape modelling, and (C) laser altimeter (LIDAR) measurement.

A successful candidate for this position is expected to contribute to the G-SST activity, primarily to shape model development by using the camera images and LIDAR raging data in cooperation with the G-SST members outside of NAOJ, including international members, to achieve scientific goals regarding (b). Because geodetic study of small bodies is a new field of planetary sciences, the candidate is needed to pioneer self-directed research in planetary geodesy. In a long-term vision, the responsibilities of this position require continuously serving planetary science community and demonstrating outstanding performance in research, such as orbital evolution, thermal history, and internal structure of small bodies, icy satellites, the Moon, and Mars. Besides, promoting international collaborations and fostering of young scientists including students in the PhD's program are required as a part of the responsibility.

The selected candidate should be able to start as soon as reasonably possible after the job offer has been accepted. The term of the contract will continue up to the end of the Japanese academic year in which the faculty reaches NAOJ's mandatory retirement age of 65.
A review for the continuation of employment will occur before the beginning of the sixth year. The review may result in the candidate being requested to transfer to another position within NAOJ.
Probation period: 6 months
(1) Work Type and Work Hours:
The Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work shall be applied.
(Standard work hours: 38.75 hrs/week, from 8:30 to 17:15 with an hour intermission)
Saturdays and Sundays, National Holidays, New Year holidays (December 29th - January 3rd),
Annual paid leave (20days: to be prorated for the first year), Summer holidays (3 days)
(3) Social Insurances:
MEXT Mutual Aid Association (health insurance), Employees' Pension Insurance, Employment Insurance, Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance
Salary: The amount of an annual salary shall be determined based on the school career and job experiences in accordance with the NINS regulations (NINS, or the National Institutes of Natural Sciences, is an executive institute that manages NAOJ). The payment will be made monthly in 12 equivalents.
Allowances: Dependent allowance, residential allowance, commutation allowance, and the other allowances will be paid when the requirements based on the NINS regulations are all filled. The equivalent of the term-end allowance and the diligence allowance shall be included in the annual salary.
Salary Increase: Once a year in accordance with the performance evaluation
Retirement Allowance: Shall be paid
(1) Candidates selected in the final short list may be interviewed by the selection committee either via internet or face-to-face. The expense for the interview will not be covered by NAOJ.
(2) NINS Employee Regulations shall be applied to this position.
(3) Smoking is prohibited on the premises excluding designated outdoor smoking areas.
