Offer Description

Three PhD positions are still available in TOPCSP doctoral network funded by the Horizon-MSCA DN- 2021 call: DLR (Germany), The Cyprus Institute (Cyprus) and John Cockerill Renewables (Belgium).

The Towards Competitive, Reliable, Safe and Sustainable Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Plants (TOPCSP) project will offer a unique international, intersectoral and interdisciplinary research and innovation framework to 10 promising doctoral candidates and will boost their excellence in the development of innovative technologies and so that they will be capable of solving the challenges that currently face the solar thermal power industry. The overall research objective of the project is to improve the design of the different systems of a CSP plant to increase its cost-competitiveness, reliability, environmental profile, and operational safety.
Core research skills will be acquired by each doctoral candidate through the doctoral-level investigations of the task associated with his/her individual research project. Additional research skills will be delivered in the network-wide workshops, international conferences and training modules. A training in transferable skills, will help the doctoral candidates project their careers towards innovative and hi-tech applications in the non-academic sector. Every doctoral candidate will undertake secondments in academic and non-academic institutions of the consortium to develop their intersectoral and interdisciplinary skills.

Please, send the application form and required documents to the contact email of each position you want to apply for. Information about the three PhD positions is included below.
Information on benefits, eligibility criteria and how to apply can be found under ADDITIONAL INFO section at the bottom of this page. The application form can be downloaded from the "Internal Application form(s) needed" section.

Additional Information

Benefits

The selected candidates will receive a 36-month, full-time employment contract based on the MSCA allowances in line with the MSCA WP 2021-2022.
The approximate allowances are (before all compulsory taxes, deductions and social charges are subtracted): Living allowance 3400 €/month + Mobility allowance 600 €/month + Family allowance (if applicable) 660 €/month.

Small variation on the above allowances results of the application of a country correction coefficient to the living allowance in order to ensure equal treatment and purchasing power parity for all researchers. Additional funding may be possible to extend the contract, depending on the host institution, and in accordance with the regular PhD duration in the host institution.

Eligibility criteria

Supported researchers must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment. Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
Recruited researchers can be of any nationality and must comply with the following mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
For 'International European Research Organisations' (IERO), 'international organisations', or entities created under Union law, the researchers must not have spent more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment in the same appointing organisation.
Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent by the researcher as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
Master’s students in their final year may apply but the candidates must hold a degree that allows enrolment in a doctoral programme at the contract signature stage.
The candidates must comply with the PhD regulation of the recruiting institution.

Selection process

Candidates will send to the email address of the contact person of each position the following information. Please, if you are interested in more than one position, send the information to each contact person indicating the order of preference in the application form:

  • Application form
  • Detailed CV of the candidate, including the list of the applicant's publications (if any).
  • Motivation letter
  • Transcripts of bachelor and master’s degrees (including the grade range)
  • English language certificate (if available)
  • e-mail address and telephone number of two referees, who can provide a letter of recommendation if needed

The recruitment strategy will be in line with the recommendations in the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The process will adhere to OTM-R (open, transparent, and merit-based recruitment of researchers) practices.
