A 3-year PhD fellowship in RASOPTA is available at the Fisheries Research Station of the Agricultural center for cattle, grassland, dairy, game and fisheries of Baden-Württemberg (LAZBW) in Langenargen, Germany, with an expected start January 1st 2022. The fellowship is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 956481.

The RASOPTA consortium consists of enthusiastic academic researchers and innovative non-academic partners, which together will train a new generation of scientists with expertise in sustainable and healthy fish production with minimum water consumption. Production of fish in recirculated aquaculture systems (RAS) requires experiences from several scientific disciplines, but there is need to bridge existing knowledge gaps between these disciplines to ensure a high water quality, healthy and non-stressed fish, and a supreme consumer quality of the fish. Therefore, in RASOPTA state-of-the-art training in important disciplines within RAS technology will be provided by 10 universities and research institutes and 8 non-academic partners in 8 countries. Primary goals of the training are to improve microbial processes to maintain a high water quality, to identify flavour compounds that may affect consumer preference for fish from RAS, and to ensure an optimum health and welfare of the fish. The research also aims at developing a DNA-based chip for early warning of quality and health of the fish. To reach the interdisciplinary goals in RASOPTA, the consortium will train 12 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in disciplines ranging from chemistry, microbiology and molecular biology, to physiology and pathology of fish. More information about RASOPTA can be found at https://rasopta.ku.dk/.

About your project

You will contribute to work package 1 which deals with the water quality issue in RAS while the main focus will lie on the diverse impacts of suspended particles on the fish production.
Particles remain a main issue for fish production in RAS. Aside from direct effects, the particulate matter can have several indirect effects at various levels of the system with potentially harmful consequences for fish stock and thus fish welfare and profitability. However, the dynamics of particle load in RAS and the specific implications on other water parameters are still poorly understood.
The main focus of the candidate’s research work will lie on the characterization of particles in commercial RAS considering size distribution, shape parameters and density. The assessment of the contribution of decomposition processes on CO2 production and O2 consumption in the system will also be part of the investigations. In order to gain a general understanding of particle dynamics in RAS, the candidate will examine potential internal and external factors influencing load and relevant properties of particles in RAS (species, feed composition, system design etc.)

More Information

  • An attractive working environment on the shores of Lake Constance with a variety of leisure options (skiing, swimming, sailing, cycling, etc.). The region itself offers everything for personal well-being, cities with larger cultural offers, shopping opportunities or other leisure activities can be reached quickly and easily in the three-country triangle Germany-Switzerland-Austria.
  • Close cooperation in a team of committed fisheries scientists - currently around 20 people (scientists, technicians, administration, students, doctoral candidates) work at the FFS. As a state research institution, the FFS is interested in a direct transfer of knowledge in practice and administration.
  • A cooperation with the University of Konstanz and other renowned research institutes.
  • The employment relationship is based on the collective agreement for the civil service of the federal states (TV-L), as well as the rules and regulations of the European training network Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Measure of the European Union. The remuneration is based on collective bargaining and personal requirements up to salary group 13 and is based on the rules of the program. The remuneration is expected to be between 64-74% over the entire project period, depending on the individual situation of the applicant.

Eligibility criteria

  • The researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of his/her host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment - unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention [1].
  • The researcher must be Early Stage Researcher (ESR): at time of recruitment he/she must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience) [2] of his/her research careers and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree.
[1] 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Protocol
[2] This is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him or her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is or was ever envisaged.
