The National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), a stand-alone national graduate university aims to cultivate public policy leaders who will play key roles in democratic governance. We are international in our outlook, with around 20% of our faculty members non-Japanese and 66% of students from abroad, most of whom are mid-career public administrators. We are seeking candidates at any level for a position to start in Fall 2022 (exact timing negotiable). Candidates should have or firmly expect a Ph.D. in Economics or equivalent by August 2022 and should show a record or promise of publications in high-quality academic journals. Appointments at the junior level will be tenure-track.
As part of a university-wide strategy of strengthening our capability in data science, we strongly favor candidates in Development Economics with expertise in modern techniques of data science such as machine learning, GIS etc. Candidates should be willing to teach an empirical development economics course to PhD students.
The appointee will be required to teach 6 to 8 units (3-4 half courses) per year, in English, and supervise masters and Ph.D. students. An appointee is also expected to conduct high level research, contribute administratively, and compete for external funds.
The appointment commences in Fall 2022 (exact timing negotiable).

GRIPS offers an attractive package of remuneration and benefits, including stipulated salary and bonuses, housing and commuting subsidies, and family medical care, in accordance with the terms and conditions normally applicable to faculty appointments in the national universities of Japan. Faculty members are eligible for GRIPS's annual research funding and leave.
