Sophia University, a Catholic university founded by the Society of Jesus, is located in central Tokyo, and is one of Japan's leading private universities. The Faculty of Liberal Arts (formerly the Faculty of Comparative Culture) offers a comprehensive program in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies taught by over 30 full-time faculty members. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome about 400 exchange students from prominent overseas universities. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers degrees in Japanese Studies, Global Studies, and International Business and Development Studies. The Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University invites applications for an open-rank position in premodern Japanese art history (Assistant Professor is a maximum five-year tenure-track appointment, while appointments of Associate Professor and Professor are tenured). The position is part of the Comparative Culture major within the Faculty. Candidates who can teach Japanese art historical and visual cultural traditions comparatively within an expanded regional or global context are especially encouraged to apply. Furthermore, our faculty is committed to promoting gender balance and we have a strong preference to hire a female candidate.

The normal undergraduate teaching load is a two-year rotation of four courses one year and five courses next year, and it includes one introductory-level course in Japanese art history and occasionally a course in our Core Program. The successful candidate is also expected to teach in the Graduate Program in Global Studies.
