OFFER DESCRIPTION

A call is open to award (1) research scholarship within the R&D Project “FemWebAI – Integrated approach for reliable and advanced analysis and design of sustainable construction systems in fibre reinforced concrete”, with the reference PTDC/ECI-EST/6300/2020, financed by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), in the following conditions:

 

Research Field: Civil Engineering or related fields

 

RECIPIENTS AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to apply, the candidates must possess:

  • A Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related fields;
  • Applicants must comply with the eligibility conditions established in Article 9 of the FCT I.P Research Fellowship Regulation (Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação da FCT I.P (2019)).

At the time of the respective hiring, candidates must prove that they are enrolled in the following course:

  • PhD in Civil Engineering.

Specific Requirements:

  • Be fluent in written and spoken English.

 

APPLICATION / ADMISSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

The call is open from 03/08/2021 to 31/08/2021 (23:00 – Europe/London).

Applications must be sent exclusively by e-mail to barros@civil.uminho.pt, with the subject “Edital BI-ISISE-UMINHO-PTDC/ECI-EST/6300/2020-B1-3”, with the following documents:

  • National identity card/Citizen card/passport/title of residence;
  • Curriculum vitae of the candidate, in Portuguese or in English;
  • Certificates of the academic degree(s) required, specifying the final grading (mandatory) and, if possible, the grades obtained in all the attended curricular units, or, alternatively, the candidate's declaration of honor that the degree was obtained until the end of the term of application;
  • Certificate of recognition of the academic degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution(s) and the conversion of the respective final grading into the Portuguese grading scale, or, alternatively, the candidate's declaration of honor that the recognition of the foreign degree was obtained until the end of the application period;
  • Motivation letter, in Portuguese or in English.

 

Regarding the above mentioned admissibility requirements, the following should be noted:

  • In the case of a degree granted by a foreign higher education institution, and in order to ensure the application of the principle of equal treatment to candidates holding foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to recognize the degree and convert the respective final grading to the Portuguese grading scale;
  • The recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas, as well as the conversion of the final grading into the Portuguese grading scale, can be requested at any public higher education institution, or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). Regarding this matter, it is mandatory to consult the DGES portal at the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt;
  • Applicants with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions can submit an application and will be evaluated with the same criteria as candidates with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, if they present, in their application, proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of the final grading into the Portuguese grading scale under the applicable legislation;
  • Applicants with foreign diplomas who do not present proof of conversion of the final grading into the Portuguese grading scale will be evaluated with the minimum classification (10 points on the scale of 0 to 20) in the respective criterion;
  • In any case, the scholarships contracts with candidates with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be signed upon presentation of proof of recognition of academic degrees, as indicated above;
  • Only candidates who have completed the required qualification by the end of the application period will be admitted. If they do not yet have the official degree certificate, a declaration of honor from the candidate stating that he/she has completed the qualifications required by the end of the application period, will be accepted. At the time of the respective hiring the candidate must present the official degree certificate.

 

DURATION OF THE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

The research scholarship will last for 12 months, with expected start on September 2021.

The scholarship may be renewed until the end of the project and/or applicable legislation, if it is necessary to complete the academic degree or to carry out activities that are essential for the conclusion of the project.

 

WORK PLAN

The activities to be executed are the following:

  1. Collaboration in the development of a web-based information platform with a database ecosystem (DBE) for the support of the predictive performance of FEM-based computer programs in the analysis and design of fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) structures that also include conventional reinforcements (R/FRC);
  2. Development and implementation of FEM-based constitutive models for the analysis and design of R/FRC structures;
  3. Collaboration on recommendations for the analysis and design of R/FRC structures using advanced FEM-based computer programs.

 

HOST INSTITUTION AND SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION

The work will be carried out at ISISE - Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering of the Civil Engineering Department, School of Engineering, University of Minho, under the scientific supervision of Professors Joaquim António Oliveira de Barros and Paulo Alexandre Ribeiro Cortez, and Doctor Fábio Pereira Figueiredo.

 

EVALUATION

The Jury is composed by the following elements:

  • President: Doctor Joaquim António Oliveira de Barros, Full Professor, ISISE, University of Minho.
  • Effective members: Doctor Paulo Alexandre Ribeiro Cortez, Associate Professor, University of Minho and Doctor Fábio Pereira Figueiredo, Researcher, ISISE, University of Minho.
  • Substitute member: Doctor José Manuel de Sena Cruz, Associate Professor, ISISE, University of Minho.

If the President of the Jury is unavailable, he/she shall be replaced by the first effective member. The first substitute member will replace the effective member.

The Jury, including the President, undertake the commitment to respect a set of responsibilities essential to the evaluation process, such as the duties of impartiality, of stating any potential situations of conflict of interest and confidentiality.

 

COMUNICATION OF RESULTS

The evaluation results, based on minutes, will be sent to the candidates, by e-mail, within 90 working days after the deadline for submission of applications.

If the result is not in favor of the applicant, he/she has a period of 10 working days to comment the results, if he/she wishes it so, in the context of a prior hearing with the interested parties, under the terms of article 121 and 122 of the Administrative Procedure Code (DL nº 4 / 2015 of January 7).

Complaints and appeals procedures: The final results of the evaluation will be sent by e-mail to all applicants, with the minutes containing the deliberations of the jury.

The selected applicant must indicate, in writing, the intention to accept the scholarship.

The second best qualified applicant will be placed in a reserve list which is valid for a period of three month, starting from the date of communication of the final results. Should the first selected candidate refuse the scholarship, this will be awarded to the second best qualified candidate.

The final decision can be contested, having 15 working days for this purpose, by sending to the President of the jury the corresponding claim. Interested parties may also submit an optional hierarchical appeal, addressed to Mr. Pro-Rector for Research and Projects, Professor Doctor Filipe Vaz.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR FINAL AWARDING OF THE SCHOLARSHIP

Research scholarship contracts are signed with the University of Minho.At the time of hiring, the following documents must be sent:

  1. Copy of the National identity card/Citizen card/passport/title of residence and tax documents;
  2. Copy of the certificates of the academic degrees;
  3. Presentation of the certificate of recognition of foreign academic degrees and conversion of the respective final grading into the Portuguese grading scale, if applicable;
  4. Document proving enrollment in the Doctoral Program or in a Course that does not confer an academic degree, identified in this application;
  5. Declaration of the supervisor(s) assuming responsibility for supervising the work plan, pursuant to article 5-A of the Research Fellowship Statute (template for the statement to be made available by UMinho);
  6. Document attesting the candidate's acceptance by the institution where the research activities will take place, guaranteeing the necessary conditions for its proper development, as well as compliance with the duties provided for in article 13 of the Research Fellowship Statute (template for the statement to be made available by UMinho);
  7. Science ID;
  8. Digital mobile key (digital signature).

The documents necessary to complete the scholarship contracting process, must be deliver within 6 months from the date of communication of the conditional decision to award the scholarship, implies the caducity and closure of the process.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIP RENEWAL

Scholarship may be renewed for additional periods, if this information is provided in “DURATION OF THE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP” of this opening notice and in the contract. This additional period may not exceed the regulatory limits or the end of the project.

The renewal of the scholarship always depends on a petition submitted by the scholarship holder, on a date prior to the end of the scholarship contract, accompanied by the following documents:

  1. report issued by the supervisor(s) and by the host entity(ies) on the follow-up of the scholarship holder's work and the evaluation of his/her activities;
  2. updated document proving compliance with the exclusive dedication regime;
  3. document proving the renewal of enrollment in the study cycle leading to a doctoral degree or of a course that does not confer an academic degree. If, at the time of the renewal, the scholarship holder has already obtained the degree or completed the course, the contract may still be renewed if in its clauses it is specified that the renewal, in these situations, is intended to carry out activities that are indispensable for the completion of the project.

MONTHLY MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE

The monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to the basic value of 1104.64 euros, according to the table of scholarships of FCT, I.P. in the country (Appendix I - Table of monthly maintenance allowances for the FCT I.P. Research Scholarship Regulation): http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.

Other benefits: Reimbursement of the Voluntary Social Insurance, corresponding to the 1st tier of the contribution base (for scholarships of 6 months or more) and Personal Accident Insurance.

Payments are made by bank transfer to the account identified by the scholarship holder.

Selection process

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The evaluation of applications will focus on the candidate's Merit, applying the following evaluation criteria, expressed in a scale from 0 and 5:

 

Candidate's Merit - CM (100%):

  • Criterion A – Final classification obtained in the Integrated Master (or the weighted average between the Master’s and the Bachelor’s degree, for candidates that don’t have an Integrated Master degree: 60% for the Master and 40% for the Bachelor) – 45%;
  • Criterion B – Scientific production (papers, reports, etc.) – 20%;
  • Criterion C – Previous experience in the field of the project – 25%;
  • Criterion D – Proficiency in both written and spoken English – 10%.

The final classification of the Candidate’s Merit (CM) will be obtained by the following formula:

 

CM = (A*0,45) + (B*0,2) + (C*0,25) + (D*0,1)

 

The jury can decide to include in the evaluation process an Interview (IN). Only the three best qualified candidates in the criterion Candidate's Merit (CM) will be considered for the interview. Besides, the interview will be conducted in English to assess the candidate's knowledge on the topic of the call (40%); English fluency, self-expression and the critical sense (40%); and motivation (20%). In this case, the Interview (IN) will have a weight of 35% in the final classification, and the Candidate´s Merit (CM) will have a weight of 65% in the final classification.The Jury reserves the right not to award the research fellowship in the competition based on the evaluation results of the applicants and their suitability for the project objectives.
