OFFER DESCRIPTION
Assistant (female/male, 1 candidate) for a fixed period of four years for work related to the implementation of the project HRZZ IP-2018-01-9047 " Frequency comb cooling of atoms” (CoolComb) and the project CALT - Center for Advanced Laser Techniques. The PdD advisor of the doctoral student (mentor) is dr. sc. Neven Santic (nsantic@ifs.hr). The aim of the doctoral thesis will be to design and implement new spectroscopic methods and laser cooling methods that will be based on the interaction of ultracold strontium atoms with a frequency comb. Specific goals include the construction of a new experimental setup for cooling of strontium, the development of a theoretical model and the experimental realization of laser cooling of Sr atoms with a frequency comb and direct spectroscopy with a frequency comb at the 1S0 - 3P0 clock transition.

Eligibility criteria
Completed Master's degree (graduate degree) in Physics or an equivalent degree entitling him or
her to embark on a doctorate, and enroll in a PhD School of Physics.
If the candidate exercises the right of priority in employment according to a special law, he is
obliged to invoke this right in the application for the competition and has an advantage over other
candidates only under equal conditions.
Pursuant to Article 13 of the Gender Equality Act of the Republic of Croatia, persons of both
sexes may apply.
Selection process
The application should include: evidence of fulfillment of mandatory requirements, certificate of
academic degree(s) in physics, motivation letter with a brief description of scientific interests and
plans, curriculum vitae indicating the advantages and experience of candidates and contact
details of at least one mentor or a scientist from whom a recommendation may be requested.
Applications should be submitted within 30 days from the day of publication of the call in
"Narodne novine", the official gazette of the Republic of Croatia. Applications should be submitted
to the address natjecaj@ifs.hr in one complete document in pdf format, in Croatian or English.
Applicants will be notified of the results of the competition within the legal deadline.
A valid application is considered to be an application that contains all the information and
attachments specified in the call. Untimely and incomplete applications will not be considered nor
will applicants with incomplete applications be invited to amend the application. Persons who
submit untimely and incomplete applications or do not meet the mandatory conditions for the
position are not considered as eligible candidates.

Skills/Qualifications
Candidates are expected to have a good knowledge of atomic physics, classical and quantum
optics, high motivation to work in the laboratory on the described topic and an excellent
knowledge of English.
Specific Requirements
Priority will be given to candidates who have shown excellence during their studies and research
activities (recognitions, awards, scholarships, published papers, presentations at conferences,
etc.). Practical experience on the research topic is an advantage.
