OFFER DESCRIPTION

In this interdisciplinary project, the post-doctoral fellow (M/F) will work on the characterization of ancient turtle populations of South Asia, particularly of Thailand and Cambodia, through the study of bones found in paleontological and archaeological contexts. To do so, he/she will have to carry out paleoproteomic analyses and then compare them with reference protein modern sequences. In parallel to these molecular approaches, a study of the morphology of the long bones of the turtles will have to be carried out using 3D geometric morphometric approaches. The aim is to determine wether the specific identification of turtle bones is possible in the archaeological record and to compare the results with those provided by the molecular analyses. He/She will also study the impact of living environments (terrestrial, occasional aquatic, exclusive aquatic) on the morphology of terrestrial and freshwater turtle bones. The last step of this project will be to compare the data collected in the material (archaeological or paleontological), textual and figurative records in order to produce a synthesis about the past human/turtle interactions in the study area.

The post-doctoral researcher (M/F) will aim to improve the current knowledge regarding the evolution of Human/Turtle interactions in Southeast Asia. This will be done through a diachronic approach of the evolution of the biodiversity of these animals in order to diachronic reading of the evolution of the biodiversity of these animals in order to:
1) to address the lack of analytical resources available to allow a thorough study of turtle bones found in paleontological, archaeological and historical sites;
2) to overcome the lack of available synthesis regarding the figurations and evocations of turtles in the art and epigraphy of the prehistoric and historical societies of Thailand and Cambodia.
3) to allow a comparison of the textual and iconographic records with the archaeological and subfossil records.
The preparatory work carried out before the postdoctoral contract will enable to complete all the goals of the project.
This project is carried out within the framework of the DIM program "Ancient Materials and Heritage".

The post-doctoral researcher (M/F) will be mainly based at Sorbonne University. However, his activity will be carried out within two research units:
- Paleobiodiversities, Paleoenvironments team of CR2P, which gathers paleontologists whose competences cover both marine and continental environments of different stratigraphic intervals and in the 3D platform of CR2P or in the collections of the Mnhn (Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy).
- Ecole Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) of Paris, which conducts interdisciplinary research on Asian civilizations.
