Open Call Notice for Post-Doctoral Research Scholarship (BIPD) (1 position)

A call is now open for applications to one post-doctoral research fellowship in the Forest Management under Global Change (FORCHANGE) research group at the Forest Research Center (CEF) of the University of Lisbon's School of Agriculture. The research will focus on wildfire management and forest planning decision support. It will encompass as main responsibilities:

- Assist with organizing and processing forest inventory data;

- Update and maintain information systems for geographic and inventory data related to forest landscapes;

- Support the simulation of forest management alternatives and the estimation of ecosystem services supply;

- Develop tools for simulating fire behavior and integrating it into forest management planning;

- Develop and apply operations research techniques and decision support systems to integrate fire risk into forest management;

- Support the organization of stakeholder workshops to demonstrate and disseminate research.

Open call for a post-doctoral research fellowship (1 position)

A call is now open for one post-doctoral research fellowship in the Forest Management under Global Change (FORCHANGE) research group at the Forest Research Center (CEF) of the University of Lisbon's School of Agriculture, under the following conditions:

Scientific area: Natural and environmental sciences

Requirements: PhD in Biology, Environmental and Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Operations Research, Information Science, Forestry/Environmental Engineering, or similar. Preference will be given to candidates familiar with operations research, a good knowledge of programming languages, proficiency in technical English, and the ability to compose scientific publications and reports.

If the qualification was granted by a foreign university, it will have to be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under Legal Decree no. 341/2007 of 12 October, regulated by Ordinance no. 227/2017 of 25 July, updated by Legal Decree no. 66/2018 of 16 August, 2018, and any formalities established therein must be satisfied by the start of the contract.

Other requirements: The following conditions must be met for the scholarship to be awarded:

Evidence that the PhD was obtained in the three years preceding the date the fellowship application was submitted;

The candidate must have a PhD completed at a research unit other than one where the post-doctoral research is to be conducted, the Forest Research Centre of the School of Agriculture of the University of Lisbon;

With the conclusion of this contract (including possible renewals), the scholarship holder must not exceed a total of three years (consecutive or otherwise) with this type of scholarship.

 

Main responsibilities:

- Assist with organizing and processing forest inventory data;

- Update and maintain information systems for geographic and inventory data related to forest landscapes;

- Support the simulation of forest management alternatives and the estimation of ecosystem services supply;

- Develop tools for simulating fire behavior and integrating it into forest management planning;

- Develop and apply operations research techniques and decision support systems to integrate fire risk into forest management;

- Support the organization of stakeholder workshops to demonstrate and disseminate research.

Applicable laws and regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Fellows, Law no. 40/2004, published in Diário da República no. 194-2004, series I-A of 2004-08-18, in the wording given by Legal Decree no. 123/2019, of 28 August, and Regulation no. 950/2019, of 16 December 2019.

Location: The work will take place at the Forest Research Center of the School of Agriculture, under the supervision of Professor José Guilherme Calvão Borges.

Duration: The fellowship will have an initial duration of 12 months, possibly starting in October of 2021 and renewable up to a maximum of three years.

Monthly fellowship amount: The postdoctoral fellow will receive a monthly maintenance allowance of €1616, in accordance with Annex I of the RBI (Regulation no. 950/2019). Voluntary social security payments are also expected to be paid, with the amount currently in force. Payment will be made by bank transfer each month.

Selection process: An assessment committee will score candidates on a scale from 1-10, where 10 corresponds to the maximum value, against two criteria: i) scientific publications, with an emphasis on peer-reviewed articles (30%); and ii) scientific and technological competencies (70%), evaluated by experience in:

work with large volumes of data in information systems;

dynamic modelling of forest ecosystems and ecosystem services;

fire behavior modelling;

forest ecosystem management planning methods;

programming of tools to support forest ecosystem management planning.

The assessment committee may decide to select up to three candidates with a classification higher than 5 in criteria i) and ii) for an interview to decide which candidate is selected. In this case, the interview will have a weight of 30% in the final classification, while the joint classification of criteria i) and ii) will have a weight of 70% in the final classification. In the event that none of the candidates for the competition meets the appropriate profile for the execution of the work plan, the assessment committee reserves the right to close the selection process without any recruitment.

Announcement and publication of results: The final results of the evaluation (a ranked list of the candidates) will be sent by e-mail to all the candidates.
