OFFER DESCRIPTION

RESP is a five-years project that will investigate how Roman emperors were represented (on portraits and in full-figure) in the western and in the eastern provinces of the Empire, between the reign of Augustus and that of Diocletian (c. 31 BC – AD 297). The research will consider all the visual media that propagated the imperial image, but will focus primarily on local coinage and sculpture (in the round and in relief). The study of provincial iconography and especially of provincial portraiture will involve a systematic survey of all the available evidence and the collation of an extensive set of data in digital format from publications and from museum collections. This will be a collaborative work carried out by a team of ten researchers (academics, post-docs and one PhD student), based in Verona, London and Coventry (Warwick), under the PI’s lead (principal investigator).
