The Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa – ICS-ULisboa –by order of its Director, dated 16/06/2021, made under the authority delegated to it by the Rector of the University of Lisbon (by Order 5018/2020, of 17 April, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, issue 87 of 27 April 2020), opens an international selection competition for the recruitment of a researcher, on the basis of a fixed-term civil service employment contract, under the funding programme contract of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Ref. UIDP/50013/2020, in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Framework Governing Academic Employment (RJEC) - Decree-Law 57/2016 of 29 August – as amended by Law 57/2017, of 19 July, also taking into account the provisions of Regulatory Decree 11-A/2017 of 29 December 2017 and the General Law on Civil Service Employment (LTFP - Law 35/2014 of 20 June), in the scientific areas of the ICS-ULisboa approved by the Order of the Rector of the University of Lisbon no. 8924/2015, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, issue 155 of August 11, 2015, within the following ICS Research Group subject areas: ‘Empires, Colonialism and Post-colonial Societies’; ‘Identities, Cultures, Vulnerabilitiess’; ‘Power, Society and Globalization’.

Type of work contract – As a rule, the responsibilities of this post will be discharged on the basis of exclusivity, in accordance with paragraph 1 of article 7 of the RJEC.

Binding terms – The binding terms of this civil service employment contract are for a fixed term of three years, automatically renewable for periods of one year, up to a maximum total duration of six years, in accordance with the provisions of Decree-Law 57/2016 of 29 August.

The monthly remuneration to be awarded is as provided for in clause 1 of article 5 of Regulatory Decree 11-A/2017 of 29 December 2017, corresponding to level 33 of the consolidated table of remuneration, as approved by Government Order 1553-C/2008 of 31 December 2008, being 2,134.73 Euros. Basic pay is supplemented by holiday, Christmas and lunch bonuses.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates must complete and submit their formal applications by e-mail to recrutamentos@ics.ulisboa.pt, by registered postal mail with acknowledgement of receipt, or delivered by hand, to the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, Avenida Prof. Aníbal de Bettencourt, 9 – 1600-189 Lisboa, Portugal. They should contain the following information: a) Application Form (available at https://www.ics.ulisboa.pt/info/informacoes-legais), addressed to the Director of the Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa, full personal details (full name, parents’ names, place of birth and nationality, date of birth, number and date of issue of identity card, citizen’s card, passport or other equivalent identification document, department or authority of issue, tax number, address, postcode, e-mail address and telephone number); b) Declaration of informed consent (attached to the application form); c) Copy of doctoral diploma or certificate; d) Detailed curriculum vitae, dated and signed in which all the aspects mentioned in paragraph 15 are included, if possible; e) A copy of two peer reviewed publications representative of the applicant’s academic career; f) A research proposal, in Portuguese or English (containing a maximum of 1,500 words) for work suitable to being undertaken in one of the Research Groups above mentioned; g) A presentation letter, in Portuguese or English, outlining current research interests and how they align with the ICS’ Strategic Programme; h) Applicants must also indicate the name, institution of belonging and contacts (email) of two social scientists of recognized merit, to whom the selection committee may refer for additional information on elements of their curricula.

By decision of the Director of the Institute candidates shall not be admitted to the selection procedure if they have not complied with the provisions of point 9. The list of applicants accepted or rejected and the final list of acceptances will be exhibited at the offices of ICS-ULisboa, published on the relevant web page and sent by electronic mail to all applicants, with a request for acknowledgment of receipt. The selection committee shall make its final deliberations within 90 days from the final date for submission of applications. 

Selection process

Assessment consists of appraisal of applicants’ curricula vitae and academic trajectories. 1 - Research, which has a weighting of 80% in the overall assessment, incorporates the following: a) Publications with an assessment of the intrinsic quality of the corresponding academic content; b) Research proposal, with an assessment of originality and suitability for the ICS Strategic Programme; c) Participation in academic meetings, with an assessment of presentations at national and international academic meetings, and conference organization; d) Research projects, with an assessment of approved and unapproved national and international applications and execution of funded research projects; e) Prizes; f) Work as academic referee for journals and books, journal editing, etc.; g) Networks and partnerships; h) Academic reports. 2 - Graduate and post-graduate career, with a weighting of 10% in the overall assessment, includes the following: a) Teaching, including lecturing in doctoral courses and other cycles, as well as the coordination of curricular units, courses and cycles of studies, specialization or updating courses, etc.; b) Supervision, including supervision and joint supervision of third-cycle dissertations and supervision of second-cycle and third-cycle dissertations; c) Networks, meaning participation in advanced training networks of national and international institutions; d) Membership of selection panels, including doctoral degree and master’s degree panels; e) Other activities, including membership of post-graduate study committees, course committees, scholarship and post-doctoral studies committees and supervision of research scholars. 3 - University Extension and Dissemination of Knowledge, with a weighting of 5% in the overall assessment, covers the following: a) Opinions, studies, reports and other documents drawn up as part of collaboration schemes with public and private sector firms and organizations; b) Dissemination of knowledge to wider audiences including, among other things, making databases available, presenting to the media the results of studies undertaken, creation of websites and web pages aimed at academic and non-academic audiences, etc. 4 - Service to the University (management of academic activities), which carries a weighting of 5% of the overall assessment, includes: a) Participation in governing bodies of university and other educational institutions; b) Co-ordination of technical and academic research services; c) Membership of consultative institutional bodies involving academic research; d) Membership of the boards of professional academic associations; e) Participation in international and national academic assessment activities; f) Other relevant services not set out above. The assessment procedure may involve interviews.

Skills/Qualifications

Candidates for this post must meet the following requirements:

a) Hold a doctoral degree, completed in the last three years, in one of the scientific areas of ICS-ULisboa, as outlined in the Rector of the University of Lisbon’s Order 8924/2015, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, issue 155 of 11 August of 2015. If the doctorate has been conferred by a foreign academic institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law 66/2018 of 16 August, as regulated by Government Order 33/2019 of 25 January.

Equivalence, recognition or the registration of the degree of Doctor shall be obtained by the end of the time limit for signing the respective contract;

b) Have post-doctoral experience and scientific contributions of merit in the research issues addressed in the subject areas of one of the ICS Research Groups: ‘Empires, Colonialism and Post-colonial Societies’; ‘Identities, Cultures, Vulnerabilities’; ‘Power, Society and Globalization’;

c) Meet other legal requirements, in particular those set out in the General Law on Civil Service Employment (LTFP) (article 17 of Law 35/2014 of 21 June).

d) Have published two scientific articles in journals indexed in the Scopus or Web of Science databases within the subject area of the competition.

Specific Requirements

The researcher to be recruited will carry out his or her research activities in one of the Research Groups ‘Empires, Colonialism and Post-colonial Societies’; ‘Identities, Cultures, Vulnerabilitiess’; ‘Power, Society and Globalization’.

As part of the work mentioned in the previous paragraph, the researcher shall:

a) Promote and undertake research activities which can be included in the Strategic Programme of the ICS-ULisboa;

b) Take part in ICS-ULisboa post-graduate activities;

c) Develop university extension and knowledge dissemination activities, in particular within the ICS-ULisboa Observatories;

d) Fulfil the other functions of a researcher, namely those set out in article 9 of Decree-Law 57/2016 of 29 August, in paragraphs 2 and 4 of article 5 of Decree-Law 124/99 of 20 April, in the Legal Framework for Higher Education Institutions (RJIES - Law 62/2007 of 10 September) and in the Statutes of the University of Lisbon and the ICS-ULisboa.
