The Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa) opens a call for one research fellowship for a PhD student, funded by by national funds through Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P./ OE. , under the project. The PhD will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Dra. Júlia Seixas School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) and co-supervisor Dra. Mónica Truninger (ICS-ULisboa).

APPLICABLE LEGISLATION AND REGULATION: Scientific Research Fellow regulation, approved by Law n.º 40/2004, of 18 August, altered by the law n.º 202/2012, on 27 of Augost, pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 233/2012, on 29 of october outubro, pela Lei n.º 12/2013, de 29 de janeiro, pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 89/2013, on 9 of July, and by the Law n.º 123/2019, on 28 of August (“Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”); Research Grants Regulation from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT, I.P.), Regulamento n.º 950/2019, Diário da República, 2.ª série, n.º 241, of 16 of December and the Research Grants Regulation of the Lisbon univeristy, aproved by the Despacho n.º 6238/2020 publish in Diário da República, 2.ª série, n.º 113, on 12 of june.

Duration of the scholarship: the schorlarship will have a duration of 12 months and extended up to 18 months.

Scholarship monthly value and payment method: The value of the scholarship will be € 1 104,64 (one thousand one hundred and four euros and sixty four cents), paid monthly by bank transfer. In line with FCT (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt) scholarship payment’s framework, personal accident insurance and voluntary social insurance.

Eligibility criteria

Applications must be accompanied, under penalty of exclusion, with the following documents. No document, which must be submitted at the time of application, may be presented after the deadline for submission: a) Personal data form and Declaration of Consent for Communication of Results via e-mail (see attached form); b) Curriculum vitae of the candidate (with a maximum of 10 pages), with reference to CiênciaVitae (https://cienciavitae.pt/) and ORCID (https://orcid.org) of the candidate; c) Motivation Letter (maximum 600 words) justifying the interest in the research project theme and the skills with which you think you can contribute to the project; d) 2 (two) letters of recommendation; e) Proof of enrollment in a PhD program in the areas of Physics, Environmental Sciences or Engineering, Social Sciences or similar areas; f) Document(s) proving that the candidate meets the conditions required for the type of scholarship, namely certificate(s) of qualification(s) of the required academic degree(s) (s), with final average, or proof that you have already applied for the respective certificate(s); g) If any of the academic degrees required in this Notice as a requirement for admission has been obtained abroad, you will have to submit one of the following documents: • Document proving the granting, by a Portuguese Institution, of recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree; or • Document proving that you have already made the application for recognition to the degree, which application must be submitted by the deadline for receiving applications, inclusive; h) The presentation of proof of obtaining recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree is a mandatory condition for signing the contract; i) For academic degrees obtained in foreign coulisboa.pt, quoting the reference "Concuntries, which have not yet obtained either recognition or equivalence or registration of the degree, it is necessary to recognize the degree, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, in conjunction with Portaria No. 33/2019, of January 25th. j) It is also required that the application and all documents associated with it, including the motivation and recommendation letters, be written in English.

Selection process

The evaluation and selection procedure will be carried out by a jury of ICS-ULisboa: Dra Maria Júlia Fonseca de Seixas, Mónica Truninger de Albuquerque de Medeiros Sousa and Dr. Patrícia Fortes

The selection methods to be used and the respective weights will be as follows: Evaluation of the CV, namely in the component of scientific experience already demonstrated, with valuation on a scale of 1-10; 40% weighting; Motivation Letter, mentioned in point 13.2, paragraph c), with a rating on a scale of 1-10; weighting 10%; Letters of recommendation, rated on a scale of 1-10; weighting 10%; Selection interview for the assessment of professional and behavioral skills (in English and/or Portuguese), with valuation on a scale of 1-10; 40% weighting. Upon completion of the evaluation, the panel will prepare the draft decision, which will be notified to the interested parties by electronic mail, and the prior hearing must be made in writing, within ten working days of notification. 

Offer Requirements


The successful candidate will participate in the activitives of the research project CitySelfy - Assessing the self-sufficiency of natural resources at local scale as a driver for sustainability transition: the case of water-energy-food nexus” (reference PTDC/CTA-AMB/6629/2020).

The main task to be developed are:

  1. Map the water-energy-food system of the municipality of Cascais, based on the information available;
  2. Participate in the implementation of a survey of the population of Cascais with a view to identifying different resource consumption profiles (for example, acceptance levels of more plant-based diets), defining upper limits on the acceptance of new technologies (for example, food from hydroponic production systems);
  3. Validate and analyze the survey results, in order to draw assumptions for the integrated modeling of water-energy-food systems;
  4. Participate in the preparation and execution of two workshops with local stakeholders;
  5. Participate in the development and expansion of the integrated modeling tool for energy-water-food systems, with emphasis on the integration of the component relating to human behavior and social preferences, and its relationship with the technological options inherent in those systems;
  6. Design and evaluate prospective scenarios for Cascais, with a view to analyzing the impact of self-sufficiency on the city's sustainability, in climate change scenarios and carbon neutral goals;
  7. Participate in the writing of scientific articles;
  8. Promote the dissemination of the project in various digital media and other actions to be decided.
