The Department of Design invites applications for the position of:

Assistant or Associate Professor in Fashion Design (tenure track)

The Department of Design is looking for a professor with a strong professional portfolio in fashion design and teaching experience in higher education. The successful candidate will be appointed for Assistant or Associate level on the Aalto University tenure track system. The Aalto tenure track principles are explained at www.aalto.fi/en/tenure-track. The appointment will begin as soon as possible, at the latest in August 2022.

Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design is one of the leading and most internationally known MA programmes at Aalto University. Our students’ works are frequently awarded and featured in fashion media. The recruitment aims to ensure the successful development and continuation of the nationally and globally recognized Aalto fashion phenomenon. The Professor in Fashion Design will be a leading force in the fashion field, driven to ensure the dynamic and constant renewal of the profession. The field is characterized by artistic creativity and continuously growing awareness of sustainability in its many facets. We seek a professor with a strong design practice, forward-looking vision, experience from the international fashion industry, pedagogical competence to further the success of our students and experience in research and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Your role and goals

A successful candidate contributes to high quality artistic activity / design practice or research, and education in the areas including but not limited to fashion design. In all levels of the tenure track system, a professor is expected to perform high-quality artistic activity / design practice or research with societal impact as well as teaching at post-graduate and undergraduate levels, to be an active member of the international design research and practice communities, and to exhibit academic leadership. Advancements in the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments, which take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas.

The criteria are meant to support a holistic evaluation of applicants. This means that an applicant is evaluated not on fulfilling every single criterion but, rather, on the overall combination and balance across dimensions and as relevant to the field and type of professorship. Combining artistic and/or practice-based work with research in a pioneering way can be a merit.

Your experience

The applicant is expected to have significant design qualifications, wide practical experience in Fashion Design and active networks in the field. In addition, the applicant is expected to have a strong and well-articulated vision regarding the field and the ways it could be developed further. Pedagogical experience in higher education is expected. We also highly appreciate professional experience of development activities and academic/applied research in design-related fields, and collaboration with different stakeholders. Design merits will be emphasized in the selection process: the applicant is expected to have at least master’s-level artistic/design qualifications in Fashion Design or an equivalent field, good knowledge of relevant theories, and wide practical experience in the field. Doctoral level degree will be considered a substantial merit as well as your transdisciplinary investigations in related fields.

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: design merits; teaching, research and collaborative skills; and active participation and leadership in the professional or academic design community. The position requires a fluent command of both written and spoken English. The position will require relocation to Finland for candidates not already living in the country.

What we offer

The Professor will be part of an inspiring and supportive community of experienced professionals and highly motivated students. The Professor will also have the opportunity to use the Department’s extensive networks both nationally and internationally, and enjoy our great resources to pursue artistic activities, education and research with the help of Aalto workshops (https://www.aalto.fi/en/arts-infra).
