PhD position within H2020 MSCA-ITN-ETN project PARENT: (ESR9) Monitoring and Integrating Neonates Behavioral and Physiological Parameters


PARENT is an EU-funded project aiming for early diagnosis of newborn motor/cognitive impairments. PARENT combines the efforts of a multidisciplinary network of leading European research groups, industry partners, pediatric hospitals and parents’ associations to develop a technological infrastructure that will train Early Stage Researchers (ESR) to conduct top-notch research in leading academic institutions, hospitals and industry R&D divisions. During the research there will be strong emphasis on career development and on achieving impact. PARENT multidisciplinary approach and technologies will make a critical contribution towards an open neurodevelopmental disease diagnostic software infrastructure by interlinking disciplines from clinical data, neuroimaging collection and processing, biomarkers, data fusion, machine learning applied to clinical data, novel prediction algorithms. PARENT approach can be included in the more general paradigm of evidence-based medicine, precision medicine and patient center-care, as well as decision support systems in clinical field.

PARENT offers in total 15 ESR/PhD research positions for 3 years (36 months), during which it is intended that a PhD project is started, provided positive evaluation.

GPI has a strong expertise in healthcare and welfare processes and services and has managed many projects , and in this project GPI will make available its private cloud infrastructure hosted in tier IV datacenters located in Italy. The team will have access to all the resources needed for the project (SQL and noSQL database, application servers, ESB servers, etc.), which will be activated on demand as virtual machines and containers based on primary vendor technologies (Vmware, Oracle, RedHat) of which GPI has been a business partner for years. The infrastructure is managed by personnel certified by the aforementioned vendors and works according to rules and criteria provided by best practices and standards UNI EN ISO 9001:2015 and ISO IEC27001:2013.



Position PARENT-ESR9: Monitoring and Integrating Neonates Behavioral and Physiological Parameters

The study in the research of software architectures and IoT-based solutions to track neonates behavioral and physiological parameters in an incubator, as well as incubator settings (environments). The research will explore the ready-to-use solutions but also propose a novel and independent hardware-software solution (module) to be easily integrated in any incubator to support wellbeing. .

In this research work, we intend to achieve three goals:

  1. Standardized input and output data feeds, new AI algorithms for infant management.
  2. A ready-to-use software architecture and reusable models to describe the entire system to. This outcome can support software engineers and developers in the implementation of similar project. The different software modules implemented to build the platforms or tools required. Novel IoT-based solutions to improve the neonates behavioral;
  3. A clinical decision support system for detecting signs of motor/cognitive impairments (and in particular CP) in premature infants based on various neurodiagnostic data sources.

The PhD will be helded in Malta in cooperation with Faculty of Information & Communication Technology,  University of Malta, Msida, MSD 2080, Malta

The selection procedure will be based on four steps:

  1. Preliminary compliance check with the MSCA eligibility criteria and the specific requirements of the ESR project (degree, specific mandatory skills, specific requirements). Incorrect or lacking documentation may invalidate the recruitment procedure.

  2. Screening of all the applications received and candidate shortlisting based on CV, academic transcripts, reference letters, cover letter and relevance for the research project.

  3. Interview (Skype or other) of shortlisted candidates. In any case you receive a feedback of your application.

  4. Final selection and ranking of suitable candidates and identification of the successful candidate.

  • Proven skills (courses, work experience, research projects) with data science related tools like:
    • Backend development (Python, NodeJS, Java)

    • Frontend development (Javascript, HTML)

    • Databases (Relational and non-relational - MySQL, MongoDB, Neo4J)

    • API REST Deployment (Express, Jersey, Flask)

    • Data science (Python, Pandas)

    • Markup languages for data representation (JSON, XML)

  • Additional qualifications:
    • Software engineering background (Software Architectures, layered-oriented design and Component-Based Software Development)
    • Previous work with IoT technologies
    • LoRa, NB-IoT, MQTT, COAP
    • IoT platforms (Google Core, Microsoft Azure IoT)
  • In view of the international context, proficiency in the English language is mandatory (B1 or higher)

[1] To be included in the doctorate program (University of Malta), candidates must fulfil the criteria established in the doctorate program in their current institution. Usually, a completed course requires at least 300 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle (Master Degree).

Specific Requirements

ESR Eligibility Criteria of the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Programme

The applicants can be of any nationality. There are specific criteria the applicant must fulfill to be eligible, as follows:

  • At the time of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.
  • ESR Candidates must be, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the Master’s degree that would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate.
  • Applicants are not eligible if they have already been awarded a PhD.
