Project ESTELLE – “Energy Storage and Power-to-x Technologies for Optimal Integration of Renewable Generation”

This project is financed by the Energy and Water Agency under the National Strategy for Research and Innovation in Energy and Water (2021-2030)

And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Industrial Electrical Power Conversion, Faculty of Engineering.

1. The Department of Industrial Electrical Power Conversion (IEPC) requires the services of a Research Support Officer to work on the above project and any other projects undertaken by the same department. ESTELLE is funded by the Energy and Water Agency (EWA), and the department of IEPC is the lead partner. The project, which started in March 2021, shall determine the technical and economic feasibility of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and power-to-x technologies in Malta.

 

2. Applicants must be in possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Honours) or in closely related discipline. Applicants should be eligible to be admitted to the M.Sc. degree (by research) of this University in terms of the applicable bye-laws of the Faculty of Engineering. The applicant should be highly motivated to work independently and as a member of a team; be prepared to work to strict deadlines; and should also have excellent communication skills, both oral and written (a good command of the English Language is essential).

 

The successful applicant will be required to enrol into an M.Sc. degree (by research) at the University of Malta in the project research area. Prior competence in the use of simulation packages (Simulink, PSCAD or similar) for power systems simulations will be considered as an asset.

3. The selected candidate must be living in Malta for the period of employment.

4. This post, which is for an initial period of 12 months and may be extend for a further 6 months, carries an initial salary of €20,800 per annum.

Further Information

  1. ESTELLE is a project that will look at the feasibility of the applying state-of-the-art battery energy storage systems (BESS) and power-to-x technologies in Malta. This shall be achieved by: (1) developing new knowledge and skills on utility scale and behind-the-meter battery energy storage and power-to-x technologies; and (2) proposing novel technical solutions, processes or services for the effective integration of these technologies.   1. The appointee will be required to:
  • Work on a day-to-day basis with the project leaders and be responsible to the project PI.
  • design, model and simulate electrical power systems;
  • carry out the necessary data processing and analysis and produce timely project deliverables;
  • assist in the development of all visual and graphical products required by the project;
  • assist in dissemination and communication activities related to the project;
  • travel for research visits and conferences as the need arises;
  • Contribute to the publishing of newspaper/media communication articles and at least one scientific article in a peer-reviewed journal;
  • perform any other project-related tasks as instructed by the project coordinator.

3. The appointee will be expected to work on a full-time basis at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

4. The selection procedure will involve:

  1. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed as supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
  2. shortlisting; and
  3. an interview and / or extended interview.

5. The post is for an initial period of 12 months, which will be subject to a probationary period of 6 months, and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
