The Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage is issuing a call for tender for granting 30 (thirty) research fellowships, hereinafter referred to as Doctoral Fellowships in Cultural Heritage, under the FCT Regulations for Scientific Research Fellowships (RSRF) and the Fellowship Holder Statute (FHS).

The fellowships shall be funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), under the Collaboration Protocol for Financing the Multiannual Plan for Research Fellowships for PhD Students, concluded between the FCT and the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC).

The fellowships for doctoral studies are intended to finance the completion by the grantee of research activities leading to a doctoral degree in Portuguese universities.

These are, as a rule, one-year fellowships, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months) and may not be granted for a period of less than 3 (three) consecutive months.

Eligibility criteria

In order to apply for the Doctoral Research Fellowships, it is necessary to:

- Be a graduate or Master in anthropology, archaeology, architecture and landscaping, earth sciences, documentary sciences, exact sciences applied to conservation and restoration, conservation and restoration, design, engineering, history, art history, museum studies, information technologies, or other scientific areas contributing to the study, safeguard, management and enhancement of the country’s immovable, moveable and intangible cultural heritage.

- Not having benefited from a doctoral fellowship or from a doctoral degree in companies directly financed by the FCT, regardless of its duration.

- Not to hold a PhD.

The work plan and scientific orientation shall contribute to the implementation of the mission of the DGPC, enshrined in Decree-Law no. 115/2012 of 25 May, and shall be part of the work areas developed in its central services, museums, monuments, palaces and archaeological sites.

Selection process

The evaluation shall take into account the merit of the candidate, the merit of the work plan and the merit of the reception conditions. Admitted candidates shall be scored on a scale from zero (minimum classification) to twenty (maximum classification) in each of the following evaluation criteria:

Criterion A — Merit of the Candidate

Criterion B — Merit of the Work Plan

Criterion C — Merit of the Reception Conditions

For the purposes of deciding on the granting of fellowships, applicants shall be ranked according to the weighted average of the results obtained in each of the three criteria, with a weighting of 20% for the Merit of the Candidate (A), 50% for the Merit of the Work Plan (B), and 30% for the Merit of the Reception Conditions (C), translated by the following formula:


Final Classification = (0.2 x A) + (0.5 x B) + (0.3 x C)

Doctoral Research Fellowships are intended for registered candidates or candidates who meet the conditions necessary to enroll in a Doctoral Program, and who wish to develop research activities leading to a doctoral degree.

Specific Requirements

Applicants shall meet the following requirements:

  • National citizens or citizens from other European Union Member States;
  • Third-country citizens;
  • Stateless persons;
  • Citizens benefiting from political refugee status.
