OFFER DESCRIPTION

Seeking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the environmental humanities to join Project Sea, Sand and People. An Environmental History of Coastal Dunes, hosted by the Center for History of the University of Lisbon. The project aims to explore human-environment relations in coastal areas worldwide, since the 18th century until today. Based on selected case-studies and comparative approaches, the project will cross qualitative and quantitative data, from the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Physical and Life Sciences, to produce innovative holistic knowledge about the dunes.

The position (Postdoctoral Fellow), funded by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council, is initially available for one year and is renewable up to the end of project in October 2023.

The work consists of: 1) doing historical research and collecting quantitative and qualitative data on coastal dunes, maritime forests, coastal dynamic, coastal management and other relevant issues for the project, in EU and Non-EU countries; 2) collaborating with other team members in data analysis and information cross to develop new knowledge; 3) contributing to the scientific outputs and dissemination activities of the project; 4) providing direct support to the Principal Investigator in the candidate’s area of expertise; 5) joining the academic activities of the Center for History.

The optimal candidate must have: 1) A relevant PhD in the area of the Environmental Humanities (History, Environmental History, History of Sciences, Archaeology or Anthropology), obtained in the three years’ prior the date of the application submission date. Candidates cannot have done their PhD research in the same institution as the one where the PostDoc work will take place. 2) Experience in historical research in archives and libraries and historical documents and materials analysis. 3) An interdisciplinary career path or experience in working in interdisciplinary projects/teams. 4) Publications in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. (5) Fluent English (written and spoken) is required.

Specific knowledge on the project thematic issues (coastal and maritime areas, climate, watersheds, forests and knowledge transfer networks), as well as knowledge of other languages, such as Portuguese, Spanish, French or German are preferential factors.

Salary will be in accordance with the Portuguese Science Foundation salary scale, specifically 1.646€ per month (net) (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), paid by bank transfer.

Ensurance (Seguro Social Voluntário and Seguro de Acidentes Pessoais) costs are supported by the employer.

Acceptance of the fellowship entails that the respective functions will be performed in exclusivity (Art. 5 of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute).
