IS THE JOB RELATED TO STAFF POSITION WITHIN A RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE?Yes
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation, emphasizing international collaborations, cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and post graduate education. CyI, through its established research centres, addresses challenging issues that are important at both the regional and international levels. Many of its research activities are being carried out in partnership with leading institutions in the respective thematic areas.
The Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (EMME) region is a climate change hotspot characterized by high concentrations of air pollution and windblown desert dust, which are expected to increase in the near future. The Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; https://cao.cyi.ac.cy/) has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME region and better document air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends).
The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and aims to integrate additional EU research infrastructure such as ICOS. It is attracting high caliber scientists from several European institutions conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for in-situ/remote sensing online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.
The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for a Technical Research Specialist position (with a full-time appointment) to support the long-term operation of CAO. The successful candidate will be a member of a dynamic team composed by young talented scientists and technical experts, working in a highly attractive and international environment (English is the formal working language at the CyI). The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for the routine operation, control, calibration, and scheduled maintenance of scientific instrumentation following international Standard Operation Procedures (ACTIRS, ICOS, GAW).
The selected candidate(s) will be supported in their tasks by international experts from LSCE (CNRS-CEA, France) and University of Helsinki (Finland) that are the institutions supporting the Cyprus Institute in the establishment of long-term atmospheric observations at the CAO.
The successful candidate(s) will also support research programs with environmental/atmospheric applications at the Cyprus Institute (field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad) as well as technical developments in collaboration with other CyI research facilities developing miniaturized atmospheric sensors of drone applications.
This position is opened in the framework of the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612). EMME-CARE aims to establish a “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Responsible for the daily operation of CAO (maintenance, calibration, international intercomparison studies) following international standard operating procedures;
- Weekly visit to the atmospheric monitoring stations in Cyprus.
- Quality assurance and quality control of atmospheric data and submission to international atmospheric database;
- Logistics support to the Research Infrastructure Unit of EMME-CARE (consumables, stock, inventory);
- Support of research activities within the Research Infrastructure Unit of EMME-CARE (e.g, drone and atmospheric sensor laboratories); and
- Participating in the field intensive campaigns of EMME-CARE (Cyprus and abroad).
For full consideration, interested applicants should process their application at The Cyprus Institute JobBoard (http://jobboard.cyi.ac.cy/) based on the instructions given. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae including a letter of interest and contact details of three references. All documentation should be in English and in PDF Format.
