5GSmartFact is a Horizon 2020 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks - European Industrial Doctorate (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2020).
5GSmartFact is recruiting 1 PhD student (Early-Stage Researcher, ESR) at UPC.
The objective of the research programme is to train young researchers to be able to analyse, design, develop and assess the deployment of 5G networks that target the i4.0 requirements and exploit them to integrate current robot applications which might lead to a complete redesign of robot architectures and hence to a leap forward in the automation industry.
5GSmartFact is jointly organized by:

Researchers will be enrolled in a doctoral programme and work in the following project at UPC:
ESR 2. Slicing for 5G dense radio networks .
The candidate will develop technologies to enable simultaneous of 5G-and-beyond mixed services (ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and enhanced mobile broadband communications (eMBB)) in an Industry 4.0 environment, like bounded latency AR/VR devices and low-rate IoT devices. In addition to the conventiona dense access points deployments, we contemplate its coexistance with controlable reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and massive distributed antennas. Network slicing facilitates a cost-effective deployment and operation of multiple logical networks over a common physical network infrastructure so that each network best serves the needs of specific applications. In an industrial scenario, mobility, interference, the propagating conditions and the different traffic types generate uncertainty that has to be taken into consideration in the allocation of the shared radio resources to different slices.

Contract and Salary
Researchers will have a three-year full time employment contract with UPC. The employment contract will provide social security coverage.
Researchers will become a full member of the institution with the same rights as regular staff with the same position. This concerns, among others, working conditions, professional environment, access to the institutional resources, and participation to decision-making bodies.
During their whole contract under the 5GSmartFact programme, researchers must not receive any scholarship or subvention by the European Commission.
Mobility and Family Allowances
Researchers will receive a Mobility Allowance as a contribution to their private mobility related expenses; and a Family Allowance should the researcher have family, regardless of whether the family will move with the researcher or not. In this context, family is defined as persons linked to the researcher by (i) marriage, or (ii) a relationship with equivalent status to a marriage recognised by the national or relevant regional legislation of the country where this relationship was formalised; or (iii) dependent children who are actually being maintained by the researcher. The family status of the researcher will be determined at the recruitment date and will not evolve during his/her participation in the 5GSmartFact programme.

Early-Stage Rule: applicants should be, at the time of recruitment in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when applicants obtained the degree, which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate.
Mobility Rule: researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
PhD Rule: selected researchers must apply for the PhD programme at UPC.
