Project: Disruption of K+ clearance and metabolic processes in astrocytes at seizure onset.
The researcher will be part of ASTROTECH, an European Training Network that includes 15 Ph.D. students in different labs all over Europe. ASTROTECH will implement “training-through-research” by the development and application of innovative technologies & methodologies, targeting the monitoring, the study, and the manipulation of the function of glial cells called astrocytes and their role and interaction with neurons at multiple scales: from intracellular and subcellular synaptic level, to cellular and neural circuits to behaviour, in both time and space.
This particular project is focused on epilepsy and has the following objectives: A) To measure astrocytic function in experimental epilepsy, combining Ca2+ imaging, electrophysiological, metabolic (glucose and lactate) and ionic (K+) recordings, and establish whether changes occur before seizure onset (biomarker identification) and are causally related to seizure genesis (mechanism). B) Validation of biolectronic devices (state-of-the-art technologies developed by the consortium) for assessing astrocyte function in vivo. C) Testing theoretical predictions obtained from whole brain simulations (The Virtual Mouse brain) performed by another ASTROTECH Ph.D. student working in the same institute.
Expected Results: Validation of biolectronic devices for in vivo recordings. Identification of a predictive biomarker of seizures. Identification of the mechanism of seizure onset for a type of focal seizures.
Skills acquired: Fundamental knowledge on neurobiology, glial biology and physiology; ethical aspects; animal models of epilepsy; in vivo electrophysiology and imaging; telemetry; functional morphology; patch-clamp; device fabrication and characterization; signal processing; comprehensive training on transferable skills.
The fellowship comes with a competitive salary (beyond national averages) within the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions scheme and with grant money for participating to training, conferences.
In addition to the training providing within the "ASTROTECH" international program, the candidate will also profit ot the local "Neuroschool" graduate program (https://neuro-marseille.org/) offering high-level training (in English language) in integrative neuroscience, research management and soft skills, within one of the largest neuroscience communities in France. Aix-Marseille University is one of few excellence-labelled universities (IDEX) in France, making of interdisciplinary research one of its main axes. Marseille is a vibrant city with wonderful natural surroundings and high-speed train and flight connections to many large cities in Europe.
The candidate will have the opportunity to visit and work in the other labs and private companies of ASTROTECH.
By EU rules, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
The top-ranked candidates are then going to be interviewed orally and finally selected through a competitive, equal-opportunities procedure.
