OFFER DESCRIPTION

The Faculty III – Department for Classical Studies,

History, History of Art and Political Science at the University of Trier

invites applications for a position as

W1 Junior Professor with tenure track to W2 LBesG

for "Maritime Antiquity" (m/f/d)

at the earliest possible date

This professorship is aimed at junior researchers in an early career phase and with extraordinary potential for a further academic career.

The professorship will be filled in a joint appointment procedure with the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum – Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Archäologie (RGZM). In case of a successel transfer to a permanent professorship (Bes.Gr. W 2 LBesG), it is intended that the position holder will be granted a leave of absence to take over a leading position at the Rheinisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz (RGZM; so-called Jülich model).

The aim of the joint appointment is the permanent establishing of the research focus on nautical history and archaeology at both institutions, as well as the institutional connection of the Department III and the research focus area TRANSMARE of the University of Trier with the RGZM.

It is desired that the candidate conducts research in the research fields of ancient seafaring and maritime trade as well as the maritime-influenced ancient economy and society, and that she/he will be involved in the development of digital research methods. The prospective candidate should actively participate in the development of the new research focus Roman Archaeology and Maritime Antiquity (FoRuM), which was jointly founded by the University of Trier, the RGZM and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE). In this context the position holder will be involved in the TRANSMARE Institute. She/he will develop targeted research projects within the framework of the aforementioned research organisations and solicit third-party funding. A willingness to cooperate constructively with the Center for Ancient Studies at the University of Trier (ZAT) is a prerequisite.

We are looking for a candidate who will continue the research on nautical archaeology of the

RGZM. The participation in the further development of the RGZM's research and outreach

activities will constitute an important field of activity for the successful candidate in both phases

of the professorship and not only in connection with the leave of absence to the RGZM and the

assumption of a leadership function at the Museum für antike Schifffahrt.

The position holder will contribute to the courses and teaching on offer at the University, in

connection with the University’s profile-forming research focus of „maritime economics“.

Thus, young scientists will be trained and introduced to the research units anchored at the

University of Trier (TRANSMARE) as well as at the RGZM and in the joint research network

(FoRuM).

The recruitment requirements result from § 54 Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate

(HochSchG), in particular, pedagogical aptitude and special qualification for scientific work

must be demonstrated. The successful candidate must be able to offer courses in German

language. In particular, the candidate must hold a degree relevant to the position with a focus

on antiquity, from either a university or comparable institution of higher education, a qualified

doctorate in the field of ancient/classical studies, and pedagogical aptitude in an area relevant

to the position.

In accordance with §§ 54, 55 HochSchG, junior professors are generally appointed for a

period of six years. An evaluation of an orienting character on the level of performance in

teaching and research will take place after the third year of employment, at the earliest, and

before the end of the fourth year of employment at the latest. A permanent transfer of the

above-mentioned professorship to Bes.Gr. W 2 LBesG will take place after a final successful

evaluation, if the candidate has proven himself/herself in accordance with the relevant

regulations of higher education law (evaluation procedure) and if he/she fulfils the general

requirements according to public services law and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-

Palatinate (§ 54 HochSchG; cf. § 50 paragraph 5 sentences 5 and 6 HochSchG). A successful

transfer to permanent W2 professorship will be accompanied by reduced teaching duties for

research purposes at the RGZM.

Disabled candidates with appropriate qualifications will be given priority. Trier University aims

to increase the quota of women in research and teaching, and explicitly encourages female

academics to apply. The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Trier University are committed to

intensive personal mentoring for students and therefore expect a strong presence of teaching

staff at the University.

Applicants are asked to submit the standard documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications,

list of courses given, if applicable with course evaluations, copies of certificates and diplomas)

and a short description of previous research projects exclusively in a closed pdf file (max. 10

MB) to the Dean of Faculty III of the University of Trier, Prof. Dr. Torsten Mattern,

(dekanatfb3@uni-trier.de), by 15.05.2021.
