Offer Description
In our group of "Experimental Physics and Material Science" at Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, Germany, we are offering two PhD positions for an initial period of 3 years. Both positions are paid according to 67% of E13 level.
In the two research projects to be worked on, optical waveguides for nonlinear and active photonic devices are to be fabricated and characterized. In the first project, waveguides will initially be produced in novel laser crystals with the help of modern methods such as ion implantation, femtosecond laser structuring and ultra-precise diamond sawing. These will then be used to realize miniaturized continuous and pulsed waveguide lasers. In the second project, the wavelength range that can be used for the nonlinear crystal lithium tantalite is to be extended to the near UV range by suitable doping and material treatment. The aim here is to significantly improve nonlinear frequency conversion in the blue spectral range in fabricated waveguides to such an extent that highly efficient sources for entangled photons can be built for applications in quantum technologies.
Formal qualification requirements are a completed master university degree with good grades in physics or photonics (or closely related scientific discipline) and very good knowledge of German and/or English, both written and spoken. Furthermore, the offered positions require good knowledge in the field of photonics and optical materials, experience in experimental work on these topics, initiative and willingness to work in a team and a strong interest in scientific work.
More information about the university and the professorship can be found at www.hsu-hh.de and www.hsu-hh.de/laser/. Please send your application with the usual documents (cv, motivation letter, transcript of records) exclusively in electronic form (pdf file), quoting the reference number ET-0123, by February 20, 2023, to personaldezernat@hsu-hh.de.
