OFFER DESCRIPTION

Our goals:

The NaNoNetworking Center in Catalunya (N3Cat) (https://www.n3cat.upc.edu/) is a multi-department research center with the ultimate goal of carrying fundamental research on communications and networking enabled by nanotechnology. We carry research in two fundamental scenarios:

Nanosensor networks: A nanosensor is a device that makes use of unique properties of nanomaterials and nanoparticles to detect and measure events in the nanoscale. Such devices require of wireless communications for control, to report the sensed data as well as to cooperate with other sensors.

On-Chip Wireless Communications: Ubiquitous multicore processors nowadays rely on an integrated packet-switched network for cores to exchange and share data. The performance of these intra-chip networks is a key determinant of the processor speed and, at high core counts, becomes an important bottleneck due to scalability issues. To address this, we take advantage of mm-wave wireless interconnects for intra-chip communication and analyze that, thanks to their low-latency broadcast and system-level flexibility, this new paradigm could break the scalability barriers of current multicore architectures.

We carry research in the following fields:

  • Nanoscale Antennas and PHY: Compact and electrically tunable graphene antennas (tens of um) that can be used in nano-scale devices, such as nano-sensors or on-chip communications.
  • THz channel: study of the propagation of waves within challenging environments such as the chip package or within the body, traversing blood and other tissues, to understand the attenuation and dispersion of electromagnetic signals.
  • Nanoscale Wireless: New MAC and L3 (and above) wireless protocols and architectures for THz and nano-antennas, taking advantage of the unique properties of these scenarios.
  • Computer Architecture: new and unconventional processor and memory architectures that leverage the broadcast and low-latency connectivity enabled by wireless communications.

We seek:

One highly qualified, motivated student to work on the area nanoscale wireless communications. We welcome Electrical Engineers and Computer Scientist holding (or about to receive) a Master of Science with an excellent student record. We are particularly seeking individuals:

  • Highly motivated and self-sufficient,
  • Capable of thinking outside the box,
  • With attention to detail,
  • With strong communication skills in English (both oral and written). The candidate will participate in research papers, international conferences, and/or project meetings.

Knowledge in one of the different domains of nanoscale wireless communications is highly appreciated (antennas, channel modeling, wireless protocols, computer architecture).

We offer:

A fully funded PhD to work in a multi-disciplinary and international team, benefits:

  • Three years, to be renewed yearly based on performance. An additional fourth year can be funded if properly justified.
  • Healthcare benefits (social security) throughout the grant, you will get standard Spanish healthcare benefits which are equivalent to the healthcare provided to Spanish citizens.
  • Travel allowance – One-way flight tickets from your current residence to Barcelona.
  • Accommodation - 1 natural month at the UPC dorms [1], specifically at the UPC Campus Residencia Torre Girona. This is next to the campus and in a very upscale residential neighborhood.
  • Your office will be located at UPC Campus Nord in Barcelona. Because of COVID we are currently following a work-from-home policy with a few on-campus meetings.
  • Travel costs for conferences, summer schools, etc: You will have a travel budget to cover your trips to conferences (with or without an accepted paper), summer schools, workshops, project meetings, etc. Travels are agreed with the PhD advisors and they need to be useful towards your research.
  • Academic internships (3-6 months)- All our PhD students undergo an internship during their studies. This is typically a US or EU top university that -again- is relevant towards your research.
  • Holidays: 30 natural days in August plus the standard bank holidays listed in the official Spanish calendar.
