Multitask new polyaromatic phosphine : synthesis and catalytic applications

Subject:

This project aims at designing new polyaromatic phosphines (Scheme 1) from greener processes (C–H activation) to generate materials which are potentially applicable as multitask platforms for catalysis (homogeneous and heterogeneous), biological activities (for instance as cytoxic agent) and energy materials (photovoltaic applications, OLED and OFET). The program is based on the rational development of synthetic methods focused on important polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)molecules that contain phosphorus atom. Phosphorus PAH are found in various areas of modern industry and medicine including fluorescent probes, solar cells, energy materials or energy storage and as such is a decisive synthetic blocks in organic and organometallic chemistry.[1]

Our group successfully employed catalytic processes in the field of N-directed C–H bond functionalization through cyclometallated intermediates on nitrogen containing molecules.[2] We also developed polyphosphine ligands efficient for palladium and gold homogeneous catalysis.[3-4]

The present project aims to develop innovative phosphorus ligands based on polyaromatic PAH scaffold by P-directed C–H bond activation for post-functionalization. This new class of phosphorus ligands can be modified by regioselective functionalization in peri or ortho-position of naphthalene, phenanthrene, pyrene or perylene moieties by the relevant transition metal and solvent couples.

The thesis application program will include for 36 months (12 months each):

1. homogenous catalysis in coupling reactions (and comparison with known biphenyl scaffold ligands); 2. extension to heterogeneous catalysis by grafting of systems on graphene oxide (rGO) using π-π interactions;

3. preliminary investigation of the photophysics, optoelectronic or cytotoxic abilities properties of the synthesized molecules and metal complexes (Rh, Ru,...). This is scheduled in the local UBFC network of cooperation (with biologist, physicists) and national cooperation (ISC-Rennes, M. Hissler group).

The PhD formation will take place in the "Organometallic, Catalysis and Stereochemistry" OCS team of ICMUB laboratory in Dijon. She/he will join the teams of Pr. Nadine PIRIO and of Dr. Julien ROGER to combine our expertise on ligands design,[5] and C–H bond functionalization by transition metals.

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate should hold a M2 in Molecular Chemistry, and have some knowledge about organic chemistry and organometallic chemistry. This subject is by nature multidisciplinary so that the candidate must be prepared to work in a team and collaborate with specialists from different horizons.
