About us

Founded in Brussels in 1983, CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) is a leading think tank and forum for debate on EU affairs. CEPS’ distinguishing features include its independence, its strong in-house, multi-disciplinary research capacity, and its extensive international network of partner institutes. CEPS’ funding comes from a variety of sources, mainly research grants, public procurement, but also from membership and conference fees.

The Energy, Resources and Climate Change unit is one of CEPS’ largest teams. Its main expertise includes international and EU climate change policy, resources and circular economy policy (including global value chains), renewable energy technologies and industry sector, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, energy-intensive industries, energy security of supply and its interaction with climate change policies, the integration and liberalisation of the EU electricity and gas markets.

The work of the Energy, Resources and Climate Change unit encompasses policy and project work, as well as the organisation of multi-stakeholder events to discuss policy developments or project work.

 

Main tasks

The selected candidate will:

  • Become a member of CEPS’ staff and work in the Energy, Resources and Climate Change unit.
  • Conduct research activities in the fields of environment, bioeconomy/biotechnology and closely related activities.
  • Lead the acquisition of new research projects in the above areas under the Guidance of the HoU.
  • Give presentations on the above-mentioned issues at project meetings and external events.
  • Write editorials and commentaries, scholarly papers, book chapters and project reports.

What CEPS can offer

We offer full-time employment, initially for 1 year. The contract is renewable. The salary will be in accordance with previous experience as well as the CEPS salary scale. We also offer a benefits package (group & hospitalisation insurance, meal tickets, public transport reimbursement, 20 days legal holiday entitlement per year plus additional days when CEPS is closed during the Christmas-New Year period). We would like the preferred candidate to start her/his activities in June/July 2021 or shortly thereafter, depending on availabilities.

NOTE: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work at CEPS is currently mostly organised remotely. This will change depending on the development of the pandemic and rules in Belgium.

Appointment will be at Research Fellow level, which will give the opportunity to progress on your career path and gain the valuable skills, training and experience. CEPS offers a Learning and Development Programme for all staff to develop the necessary skills for their position.

Eligibility criteria

  • You have a Master’s degree or PhD in economics, climate change, sustainability etc.
  • You have 5 years of experience as a minimum in at least one of the following subjects: i) environment/biodiversity/natural capital, ii) bioeconomy/biotechnology.
  • You have proven record of outstanding writing and presentation skills.
  • You have good knowledge in quantitative methods.
  • You are proficient in English, both orally and in writing. You have an excellent knowledge of at least one other language.

Profile of the ideal candidate

  • You have developed insights into ongoing legislative and policy debates in the fields of environment/biodiversity/natural capital, ii) bioeconomy/biotechnology.
  • Knowledge on sustainable finance and (green) innovation would be an asset.
  • You have a network in the above fields which you wish to further grow.
  • You have the ability to work independently but you also enjoy teamwork and are open to giving and receiving feedback.
  • Record of designing and implementing research projects will be an asset.
  • Strong work ethics and a commitment to respecting colleagues and deadlines.
