The Department of Separation Science at the LUT School of Engineering Science is hiring a junior researcher (doctoral student) for the research team of industrial hydrometallurgy

The department employs approximately 100 researchers focusing e.g. on the development of advanced and sustainable processes to enable resource efficient raw material utilization and the minimization of created waste. The department operates at three locations in Finland – Lappeenranta, Lahti and Mikkeli – with state-of-the-art laboratories and close collaboration with industry.

The researcher’s main task will be to conduct research for a doctoral dissertation in hydrometallurgical separation methods, especially solvent extraction, ion exchange and solid-liquid separation. The duties also include daily activities of the research team, such as like maintenance of laboratories and equipment, supervision of trainees and undergraduate students, and assistance in teaching.

We are looking for an expert in the field of hydrometallurgical separation methods. Experience and/or knowledge in solvent extraction, ion exchange, solid-liquid separation, leaching and precipitation is an advantage, as is understanding of the circular economy of metals. The candidate is required to have a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. chemical engineering, chemistry) and the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e. four years). The candidate will draft a postgraduate study and research plan under the guidance of the supervisor of the doctoral studies once the work starts.

The junior researcher must obtain the postgraduate study right for the doctoral degree within one year of the beginning of the employment relationship.  The employment starts with a one-year term including a six-month trial period and can be extended for another three years provided that the studies have progressed satisfactorily. The salary is based on the salary system of Finnish universities.

The starting date is negotiable, and the location is LUT’s Lappeenranta campus with a possibility for remote work when duties allow.

The deadline for applications is 9 May 2021 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC + 3 h) . To apply for this position, please fill out the online application form and attach the following documents in English:

  • A curriculum vitae (max. 3 pages)
  • A research plan describing the research you would like to conduct on the topics above (max. 3 pages)
  • A motivation letter (max. 1 page)
  • A copy of your academic degree certificate and transcript of records. If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.
