Scientific Programmer
(f/m/d; W090)
Working in a small team of scientific programmers in the MPI-M Scientific Computing Laboratory SCLab in the context of the EU Euro-HPC project ACROSS (GA 955648). The main working tool in the group are the supercomputing systems at DKRZ and other European high-performance computing centres, where the MPI-M Climate Modelling System ICON and its computing environment including its High Performance Data Analysis HPDA components is developed, used and maintained. The successful applicant will contribute to the HPDA system in ICON, develop the metadata mapping mechanisms in question, develop interfaces to existing workflows, contribute to the testing harness necessary and to pilots planned in ACROSS. These activities will interface the ICON data production system to the ECMWF distributed object storage system under development. The applicant will be working in a small group of scientific programmers for ACROSS in SCLab and also contribute to the basic model environment and workflow support in the Lab, concerning the ICON modelling system.

Employment conditions
- The position is offered for 30 months, the starting date will be no later than September 1 2021.
- Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVöD E13/E14), including extensive social security plans.
- The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

Skills/Qualifications
Qualifications / Experience
- Experience, or a strong interest in High Performance Computing and data production, streaming and handling.
- Experience with simulations on supercomputers producing extreme volumes of data.
- Expertise in C/C++, UNIX/Linux, shell scripting, processing and visualization of simulation data.
- Good communication and teamwork skills, ability to work autonomously and self-responsible.
- English is our working language, so proficiency is a pro.
- A PhD in Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Geosciences or a related field would be advantageous.
