In order to address the climate change and achieve the internationally set climate targets, the energy supply will have to undergo major changes in the coming decades. What will the energy mix look like after the phasing out of nuclear power and coal, and the expansion of renewable energies? Which technologies will have to be introduced or further developed? What consequences will result from the change in transportation? What could a climate-neutral energy supply look like that makes economic sense and at the same time offers sufficient security of supply?In order to be able to answer these and other questions scientifically, numerous models are being developed at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research - Techno-economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3), in the research field of energy system analysis, with which energy systems can be represented and examined. Energy system analysis faces the challenge that a large number of complex models have been developed in the past, which are very heterogeneous in their objectives, methods and level of detail. It is therefore becoming increasingly difficult to identify the models best suited to answer a specific research ques-tion and to understand their respective differences and specificities.
First, you will design a semantic framework for the description and categorization of energy system models and their underlying methods. Based on this framework, you will describe the characteristics of selected models in the context of a method and soft-ware catalog. To ensure the sustainability and continuous extensibility of this catalog, it will be embedded in the digital structures of the Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG).On the basis of ontology-based interface descriptions, you will identify suitable model workflows resulting from model combinations in this context in addition to individual models. In order to support the selection of a workflow, you will develop technical and content-related comparison criteria as well as methods for their measurement. Finally, the orchestration and computation of cross-platform and distributed workflows will be automated as far as possible.
- Conception of a semantic framework for the description and categorization of energy system models and their underlying methods
- Development of a method and software catalog within the ORKG
- Use of ontologies to identify models and methods suitable for answering scientific questions
- Definition of content-related and technical criteria for the comparison of models and methods and development of procedures for their measurement
- Automation of model workflows using state-of-the-art software container technologies
- Masters degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, mathematics or a comparable course of study, which you have completed with very good results
- Interest in energy technology and energy management issues
- Experience in modeling, simulation and optimization desirable
- Experience with ontologies, knowledge graphs or the Semantic Web desirable
- Good programming skills (preferably in Python)
- Independent and analytical working style within a project team
