OFFER DESCRIPTION

EURIdoc - Eucor Upper Rhine Immunology doctoral programme

EURIdoc is a new interdisciplinary doctoral programme in the Upper Rhine region in the field of immunology. It includes up to 28 doctoral positions for young scientists from all over the world. The programme is run and coordinated by Eucor – The European Campus.

The doctoral research is carried out at the EURIdoc partner institutions:

Scientific orientation

The scientific orientation of EURIdoc is based on the immunological foci that exist in Basel, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Strasbourg. The core topics of EURIdoc are haematopoiesis and development of the immune system, innate and adaptive immunity as well as immune-related diseases. The emphasis is on both basic research and work on applications. In the long term, these may lead to new drugs, vaccines or therapies, for example for cancer, viral or autoimmune diseases. The project also focuses on the most urgent immunological problem of our time, SARS-CoV-2, and plans to develop new therapies for Covid-19.

Interdisciplinary and intersectoral training

Beyond the university sector, the doctoral candidates will also work with four clinics and ten industrial partners. They will have the opportunity to spend research periods in leading pharmaceutical companies as well as in small and medium-sized companies.

The project strengthens the strategic thematic focus “Personalised Health – Precision Medicine” of the trinational alliance. EURIdoc is based on the existing close cooperation between the participating immunologists from Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg. Since 2017, they have been networked as the Upper Rhine Immunology Group (URI group) and organise annual clinical workshops and scientific meetings. In addition to a Seed Money project aiming at cross-border connection among master’s programmes, EURIdoc now forms another building block of cooperation and education in immunology in the Upper Rhine region.

Funding

EURIdoc has been selected by the European Commission as an innovative international and interdisciplinary doctoral programme. Within the framework of the COFUND programme of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Horizon 2020), EURIdoc receives funding of 3 million euros from the European Union. Together with the co-financing of the participating partner organisations, the programme has a total of 6.8 million euros at its disposal over a period of five years.

Eligibility criteria

EURIdoc has the following eligibility criteria:

1. The candidates must hold an academic degree, which allows them to embark on a doctoral programme at the recruiting universities before the recruitment date of 1 November 2021.

2. The candidates should have studied any field of the life-sciences, such as biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or molecular medicine. However, if a change in orientation seems justified, this should be explained.

3. The candidates must be, at the date of the call deadline, in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) after achieving a Master’s degree or equivalent and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree.

4. The candidates have to comply with the mobility requirements of the PhD programme (MSCA-rules): not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies) in the country that will recruit the applicant for more than 12 months in the 3 years before the recruitment date of 1 November 2021. For refugees under the Geneva Convention, the refugee procedure (i.e. before refugee status is conferred) is not counted as a period of residence/activity in the country of the host organisation. Applicants will be asked to sign a self-declaration that she/he complies with the MSCA mobility criterion.

Selection process

1. Written application

All candidates passing the eligibility check (see eligibility criteria, above) will be selected for short list 1. The application documents of short list 1 will be evaluated by 3 independent external experts. The candidate will be evaluated on: Qualifications, Working experience, Motivation letter, Research interests

2. Interview

Once candidates have passed the written evaluation they are selected for short list 2.

The candidates of short list 2 will be invited for an interview carried out by a panel consisting of the potential supervisors and independent experts. Depending on the Covid-19 pandemic or with regard to other reasons, interviews may be carried out via a teleconferencing system.

Based on the interview results the candidates will be ranked per PhD project to establish the short list 3 and a reserve list. Applicants of short list 3 are asked to notify rapidly if they accept the position offered. If they decline, the position will be offered to the applicants of the reserve list.
