Project description:

Project embedded into the DFG-funded research unit ‘CytoLabs’, aiming at exploring and exploiting the activities of cytochalasans through a systematic and integrated, collaborative approach. Cytochalasans are biologically active fungal metabolites, which are best known to bind to actin, the main building block of the eukaryotic actin cytoskeleton. Cytochalasans thereby cause changes in cell morphology and motility, but also in trafficking and secretion. A multitude of studies have demonstrated that different cytochalasans can exert differential effects on actin and thus on whole cells. However, the molecular basis of these differences remain poorly defined, and are thus subject of this research project.

The candidate will work at the interface between the production and analysis of different cytochalasans from natural and synthetic sources. Thus, the candidate will have the challenging task to set up a systematic series of high content screening (HCS) microscopic assays to probe the different incoming cytochalasans for their effects on selected actin dynamics-mediated processes such as adhesion and migration in tissue-cultured cells. In addition, she/he will file the data and establish a detailed catalogue, systematically bringing together phenotypic effects with the origin, purity or purification protocols and structural features of respective cytochalasan.



  • Master’s Degree in biology, or a related field within the life sciences
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an international team
  • Experience on tissue culture and state of the art wet lab techniques such as Western Blotting or molecular cloning
  • An interest in chemistry is highly beneficial
  • Publications in a peer reviewed Journal are advantageous
  • The Project demands a well-structured and communicative working style
