The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is seeking candidates for the position of

Professor (W3) of Data Science with a Focus on Machine Learning and Its Applications

for appointment by 1 April 2022.

The University of Greifswald and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences will establish a new interdisciplinary institute for Data Science with a focus on the interface of applied and basic research. In the founding phase, two new professorships will be created. For the W3 professorship advertised here, we are looking for an academic who is able to represent the full scope of data science in both research and teaching. Internationally recognised expertise in data modeling and data analysis using machine learning and advanced statistical methods is a prerequisite for this position, as is experience in transferring data science algorithms into applications. The research profile of applicants should be compatible with at least one of the University’s key fields of research. Furthermore, the willingness to build a collaborative network to strengthen collaboration within and among the University’s faculties as well as with research institutes affiliated with the university is expected. The future holder of this position will also be appointed Deputy Director of the University Computer Centre and s/he is expected to lead the centre as Director from 2028 onwards.

Applicants should be able to document relevant experience in interdisciplinary research through outstanding publications, third-party funding, and leadership experience. The professorship will contribute significantly towards a master's degree course in Data Science, which is currently in planning. Therefore, the application should include a teaching concept for data science in addition to a strategy for the development of the new Institute for Data Science and the University Computer Centre, including a research concept. Enthusiasm for excellent teaching with corresponding teaching experience and the ability and willingness to train students in all phases of their studies, to supervise academic publications, and to support academic colleagues during their doctoral and postdoc phases are further requirements.

Candidates must be willing to participate in academic committees. International experience is desirable. The ability and willingness to teach in English is required. For international applicants, the willingness to acquire German language skills within three years is required, so that the future holder of this position will be able to teach in German and to participate in university committees.

Applicants must fulfil the requirements for a university professor according to § 58(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz – LHG M-V (State Higher Education Law): a university degree, teaching experience, and a high level of scientific research, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree. Further academic achievements are expected. § 58(2) LHG M-V stipulates that these are usually proven by a junior professorship, habilitation, or equivalent.

In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the appointed professor will be assigned the status of a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis) with unlimited tenure; alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee. As a general rule, permanent tenure as a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit) can only be awarded for the first time to persons who have not yet ended their 50th year of life when they enter employment.

This position is open to all applicants, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented and thus applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for the position. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will be considered with preference.

Unfortunately, application costs will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

For more information, please contact Prof. Dr. Gerald Kerth, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Applications with all usual documents (Curriculum Vitae (CV) detailing the academic career, list of scholarly publications and courses taught, academic certificates, proof of teaching experience and experience of teaching in schools, details of externally raised funds, teaching and research concept) must be sent via email (one PDF file) by 04/06/2021 addressed to:
