Neuronal architecture of working memory: a combined single-neuron and network-level approach in humans.

Working memory (WM) is the capacity to manipulate information in short-term memory and use it for a goal directed behavior. WM is a key component of many cognitive processes, including inference, decision-making, mental calculations or awareness and is disrupted in many neurological and psychiatric diseases like Schizophrenia, Depression and ADHD. WM is a primary focus of research in cognitive neuroscience with more than six papers published every day. Despite this accumulation of research our knowledge about the cellular basis of WM in humans remains limited. This is because the traditional, non-invasive techniques employed in the field of cognitive neuroscience lack the resolution necessary to study this aspect of the human brain.

The main objective of the project is to provide insights into the neuronal mechanisms of WM at the single-neuron level and translate these results into network-level knowledge. Using my specialized expertise in single-neuron recording in humans I will exploit the unique opportunity to record neuronal activity in two brain structures fundamental for human WM (and those structures are also affected in Schizophrenia, Depression and ADHD): the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and dopaminergic nuclei (substantia nigra), during the surgical implantation of Deep Brain Stimulation devices in the clinic. These data, together with electrical stimulation (providing causal insight), and state of the art computational techniques will be used to create a comprehensive framework about the neuronal architecture of WM. A better understanding of the neural code of WM will aid treatments of psychiatric disorders characterized by WM deficiency.

Key responsibilities includes:

  • Planning and conducting experimental work (research conducted during implantation of DBS electrode and epilepsy monitoring)
  • Data analysis (analysis of electrophysiological signal including single-unit sorting)
  • Manuscript preparation
  • Supervision of PhD students

We offer:

  • Full-time employment contract in the top-ranked research institute in Poland.
  • Maximum period of contract/stipend agreement: 2,5 years
  • Remuneration: 15 000 PLN of full remuneration cost, i.e. expected net salary at c.a. 9 000 PLN/month (ca. 2 000 EUR/month)

  • Experience in human electrophysiology research
  • Strong MATLAB programing skills
  • Knowledge of Machine learning, State-space, and spike-filed interaction analysis
  • PhD degree, or equivalent, in biology, psychology, medical
  • Exceptional motivation for the scientific research (demonstrated via publications, references of the candidate's thesis tutor)
  • Knowledge of single-neuron mechanisms of working memory in humans
  • Proficiency in English and Polish (research with Polish speaking subjects)
