Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Bioinformatician with the ambition of working with large-scale life science data in order to propel the research in the Phenomics Platform at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) to start 1 July 2021 or after agreement.

About us

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) was established in 2010 to conduct fundamental research on metabolism. The Center has around 260 employees, consisting of 21 research groups and 5 technology platforms, who work in a vibrant international research environment with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. Our researchers share a common purpose as they seek to transform the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center’s research has resulted in seminal discoveries as to how genes, hormones, and environmental factors influence metabolic health and disease throughout life. You can read more about us here www.cbmr.ku.dk.

The Phenomics Platform sits at the heart of CBMR and consists of eight full-time employees headed by Associate Professor Niels Grarup. The Platform supports CBMR research by managing and analysing longitudinal biomedical data obtained from molecularly and clinically phenotyped human samples. In total, we integrate data from more than 200,000 biological samples and our measurements include information on genetic variation and other omics data, periodic changes of lifestyle, anthropometrics and biochemical measurements. Read more about the platform at https://cbmr.ku.dk/researchfacilities/phenomics/.

Your job

As a Bioinformatician in the Phenomics Platform, you will be responsible for setting up new pipelines for data analysis including quality control, visualization and analysis of human genetic data. Furthermore, tasks will include setting up strategies for integration of different types of omics data such as lipidomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and microbiome data. Another essential part of the position will be to provide bioinformatics support to colleagues with different scientific backgrounds on various projects. The Phenomics Platform is an integral part of CBMR and hence, a large part of the work tasks will be focused on interacting with scientific research groups across CBMR.

Your profile

Essential criteria:

  • PhD degree in bioinformatics, applied statistics, computer science, systems biology or similar
  • Strong experience with human genetics or metagenomics data and analysis, e.g., SNP array data and/or sequencing data
  • Competent in the Unix shell and skilled in one or more programming languages such as Julia, R, Perl or Python
  • Highly motivated person with strong collaborative skills
  • Willing to share knowledge and expertise and support a multidisciplinary team
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Desirable criteria:

  • Practical experience with building bioinformatics pipelines in an HPC computing environment using pipeline managers e.g. snakemake
  • Solid knowledge of statistical analyses
  • Experience in working with multi omics data
  • Experience with code version control, e.g. GitHub
  • Experience in working with human microbiome data

Place of employment
