About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral position within Food Science at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, one of eight departments in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The position is related to the project Norwegian-grown renewable pigment from microalgae for robust salmon funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The postdoctoral project's overall aim is to gain knowledge about the pigmentation and growth of Atlantic salmon fed pigments from microalgae. Moreover, it will be highly relevant to study mechanisms involved in salmon pigmentation and pigment sources' influence. The project will be closely related to Fjordalg AS, a producer of algae, and NORD University (Bodø, Norway), responsible for the feeding trials.

The position reports to Associate professor Jørgen Lerfall.

Duties of the position

  • The candidate is expected to take part in the project work actively
  • The candidate will be specifically responsible for the analytical work package that includes analyses of pigments, their metabolites, and methodology to study uptake mechanisms
  • The candidate is expected to actively disseminate results within the project, the scientific group, and to the society overall
  • The candidate should take an active part of the Food Science research group at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science

Required selection criteria

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is the qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in Food Technology, Food Engineering, Food Science, Biotechnology or equivalent education, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Candidates with experience from practical laboratory work relevant to the given project and/or specific analytical skills which fit the projects will be preferred
  • Competence within chromatography (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, etc.) and or molecular biological methodologies such as PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, RNA-Seq is beneficial
  • Applicants should have good communication skills and be fluent in English, both orally and in writing

Preferred selection criteria

  • experience with salmon aquaculture
  • experience with carotenoid chemistry and metabolism

  • Ability to be creative and take initiative in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic in food processing and seafood science, with a keen interest in a wider context than own research
  • Open-minded and interest in exploring new methodology in the research field

We offer

Salary and conditions

The employment period is 2 years.

Postdoctoral candidates are placed in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 545 300 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.


The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability.
