Information about the position
Politecnico di Milano is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate for the Optimization and data assimilation methods for therapy planning system for tumor thermal treatment.
The research activities defined for the Postdoctoral researcher focus on the development of a numerical model for the optimization of laser ablation in cancer treatment. It is required to implement physical simulations of the temperature distribution and evolution in tissue undergoing laser therapy, for treatment settings planning and intra-operative adjustment of the pre-planned settings for personalized treatment. Data assimilation, numerical optimization SOFA, phyton, C++ and FEM will be used to develop the research project activities.
The activity will be carried out according to the following phases: improvement of a numerical model to simulate the temperature distribution in biological tissues undergoing laser ablation treatment, assessment of data assimilation methods starting from sparse real-time temperature measurements, implementation on SOFA for intra-operative and real-time planning. Travels to the project partner, INRIA, in Strasbourg (France), are envisaged.

Information about the LASER OPTIMAL project - Laser ablation selectivity and monitoring for optimal tumor removal
LASER OPTIMAL (ERC Starting Grant GA n. 759159) is a human-oriented project, whose goal is the development of a novel strategy for safe tumor removal with laser therapy. The new frontiers of laser therapy focus on the optimization of several technical aspects, such as measurement systems to monitor in real-time the thermal effect, to control the tissue damage; approaches for enhancing the selective absorption of the laser light by the target tissue; simulation-based tools, useful for the prediction of treatment outcome. The rationale of LASER OPTIMAL is the control of the energy delivery in tumors, aiming to minimize the unwanted heat dispersion into the surrounding healthy tissue. The multidisciplinary team is working on the design of a patient-specific platform, useful to plan the treatment and to monitor the thermal outcome in real-time, in conjunction with the injection of nanoparticles for enhancing the selectivity of the treatment.

The successful candidate is required to have:
- PhD in at least one of the following subjects: Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automation Engineering.
- interest and proficiency in programming ability, in particular python or other languages (e.g., C++/OpenCV)
- demonstrated knowledge on data assimilation methods
- knowledge of the software SOFA is considered a plus
- demonstrated record of relevant experience as evidenced by the track-record and publications
- fluency in English, both spoken and written
- The candidate should be able to work both independently and interactively in a team setting and possess a noticeable enthusiasm for research.
