OFFER DESCRIPTION

Over-reactivity and defensive behaviors in response to tactile stimuli are common symptoms in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) patients and autism mouse models. Recent studies show active avoidance responses to repeated whisker stimulation, suggesting that impaired somatosensory processing is a common feature in mice lacking autism-related genes. In this project, we want to extend our analyses to other monogenic mouse models of ASD, namely Cntnap2 and Shank3b knockout mice, which are known to have anatomical defects in the somatosensory cortex. We will evaluate the anatomical and functional development of the somatosensory system in mutant mice, as compared to age-matched controls, by using different experimental techniques spanning from molecular biology to behavioral phenotyping. The overall goal of this project is to deeply investigate, at multiple levels, impaired somatosensory function in mouse models of autism. Eligibility criteria

a)A PhD in Biology, Biotechnology, Physiology, Neurobiology, Neuroscience or related discipline is requested, awarded by an Italian university or a foreign one. Also admitted candidates who declare to have completed all their Ph.D studies, including the thesis, and will have attained their PhD qualification prior to signing the contract; such candidates must provide official University confirmation of having met such requirements
b)appropriate scientific and professional experience required to carry out the research described in article 1
c)Documented experience in neurobiology and behavioural neuroscience
d)Documented experience with immunohistochemistry, optical or confocal microscopy, and animal behaviour
e)Excellent knowledge of the English language
Potential additional skills:
- Documented experience in the study of animal models (rodents) of neuropsychiatric/neurological disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and documented experience in the study of brain plasticity.
