KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

The SEED department is hiring a PhD student for interdisciplinary research on social aspects of the future electricity system. The successful candidate will be part of the European research school, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, and the GECKO project, to work with 14 other doctoral students within an interdisciplinary consortium of nine European academic and industrial institutions, with support from 6 European industrial partners and Stanford University.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Planning and Decision Analysis, with specialization in Environmental Strategic Analysis

The PhD project is motivated by a sustainable future, including a transformation of the energy system. The project applies human centred design to implement smart electrical grids in people’s everyday lives, recognizing the heterogeneity of households. The PhD project will apply existing knowledge in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and design research to the area of smart grids.

Candidates for the position are expected to have a social science background combined with knowledge in e.g. HCI, media technology, and sustainable development. Candidates with purely technical backgrounds will not qualify for the position.

Eligibility criteria

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

• passed a degree at advanced level,

• Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or

• In any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.

Specific Requirements

• Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date.

• Applicants must be, at the date of recruitment, in the first four years from the date when obtained the degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate and not been awarded a doctoral degree.
