Work duties
The PhD student will work in the NCN SONATA project 2019/35/D/ST7/00350 “Quality of Service in IoT Applications Using Large Scale Antenna Systems”. The project will focus on meeting the requirements of Internet of Things applications by applying advanced optimisation techniques to develop solutions for resource allocation and scheduling in large scale antenna systems such as massive MIMO and its future iterations including Large Intelligent Surfaces. The solutions developed will be tested through both numerical studies and simulations. One goal in the project will be to develop a suitable simulator for large scale antenna systems.
The successful candidate will be expected to undertake research visits to collaborators at international universities as well as to scientific conferences and other professional events. Funding for travel will be provided from the project.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research and courses. The work duties may also include teaching and other departmental duties.

General admission requirements for doctoral studies:
-
MSc degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, engineering physics, engineering mathematics, information and communication engineering, or similar.
-
Students who are in their final semester of their MSc degrees are also welcome to apply, and there is the possibility to undertake an MSc thesis within the project before the formal commencement of doctoral studies.
Requirements for this position:

Excellent knowledge of mathematics
-
Good skills in academic writing
The following compentencies are also meritorious:
-
Knowledge of computer networking and telecommunications
-
Knowledge of optimisation techniques, especially mathematical programming (linear programming, mixed-integer programming)
-
Knowledge of large-scale antenna systems such as massive MIMO
-
Knowledge of simulation methods such as discrete-event simulation and documented experience programming simulators
Assessment criteria
The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle. Special attention is paid to the following:
-
Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study.
-
An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
-
Written and oral communication skills
-
Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience.
Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the PhD degree.
Terms of employment
The position is paid directly from the NCN SONATA project 2019/35/D/ST7/00350 “Quality of Service in IoT Applications Using Large Scale Antenna Systems”. The PhD studies will start on 1st October 2021, however the successful candidate will have the option to begin working in the project earlier, either as a Masters degree thesis student, or as a project assistant.
Instructions on how to apply
Applications shall be written in English and include a cover letter stating the reasons why you are interested in the position and in what way the research project corresponds to your interests and educational background. The application must also contain a CV, degree certificate or equivalent, and other documents you wish to be considered (grade transcripts, contact information for your references, letters of recommendation, etc.). Applications should be emailed to Dr. Emma Fitzgerald (efitzgerald@tele.pw.edu.pl).
